So, I recently logged back onto a dating website that I haven’t been on for a while. I started talking to this one gentleman and he revealed that he was a freemason. I’m thinking that I should break off contact with this person or remain strictly friends. Advice?

He may not know of/hold the virulent anti catholicism that is a part of Masonry. Does he know you are a Catholic?

I just told him and he has yet to reply but it’s on my profile and I mentioned going to church and attending mass.

I would say to wait and see, then. If he’s fine with your being Catholic, I would say to go ahead and just talk with him/get to know him.

I say he is not a suitable mate. Does he believe in the occult stuff?

He may be not far in the order. If so, then I may be wrong. Of course he could always come around.

I would say what Maximilian75 said. If you say you would like to be friends and the dude is interested in you (he probably is), he will want to be more than friends. He’s going to get really clingy and not going to want to stay in the friend zone. He will try to flirt in the friendship and the whole thing will just be awkward. Girls screw themselves over then they tell a guy they don’t like the just want to be “friends” because the man will think he still has a shot and will be an annoying pain in the butt. If you are going to reject him, don’t beat around the bush with it tell him straight up. It might hurt him but it will keep you safe.

i would say nip it in the bud, your soul and your faith is more important,if friendship lead to a relationship it be a problem as it is said in Sirach 6:7 When you gain friends, gain them through testing, and do not trust them hastily.and do not be mismatch with unbelivers

2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be mismatched with unbelievers. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship is there between light and darkness? 15 What agreement does Christ have with Beliar? Or what does a believer share with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said,

“I will live in them and walk among them, and I will be their God,and they shall be my people.17 Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean;then I will welcome you,18 and I will be your father, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

Is he hoping for a career in the police? I get the impression being a freemason helps with this.

Freemasonry is incompatible with the Catholic faith. Freemasonry teaches a naturalistic religion that espouses indifferentism, the position that a person can be equally pleasing to God while remaining in any religion.

Masonry is a parallel religion to Christianity. The New Catholic Encyclopedia states, “Freemasonry displays all the elements of religion, and as such it becomes a rival to the religion of the Gospel. It includes temples and altars, prayers, a moral code, worship, vestments, feast days, the promise of reward or punishment in the afterlife, a hierarchy, and initiation and burial rites.”

Masonry is also a secret society. Its initiates subscribe to secret blood oaths that are contrary to Christian morals. The prospective Mason swears that if he ever reveals the secrets of Masonry - secrets which are trivial and already well-known - he wills to be subject to self-mutilation or to gruesome execution. (Most Masons, admittedly, never would dream of carrying out these punishments on themselves or on an errant member).

Historically, one of Masonry’s primary objectives has been the destruction of the Catholic Church; this is especially true of Freemasonry as it has existed in certain European countries. In the United States, Freemasonry is often little more than a social club, but it still espouses a naturalistic religion that contradicts orthodox Christianity. (Those interested in joining a men’s club should consider the Knights of Columbus instead.)

The Church has imposed the penalty of excommunication on Catholics who become Freemasons. The penalty of excommunication for joining the Masonic Lodge was explicit in the 1917 code of canon law (canon 2335), and it is implicit in the 1983 code (canon 1374).

Because the revised code of canon law is not explicit on this point, some drew the mistaken conclusion that the Church’s prohibition of Freemasonry had been dropped. As a result of this confusion, shortly before the 1983 code was promulgated, the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a statement indicating that the penalty was still in force. This statement was dated November 26, 1983 and may be found in Origins 13/27 (Nov. 15, 1983), 450.

They all believe in the occult. I know this from some freemasons on the internet (the type who regret it). The Baphomet figure has been created by them so new members who can’t see the devil yet because they aren’t trained enough can have an image to invoke him during their rites.
It’s their business if they want to do this, God forbids this, the Church always said this is dangerous the devil is our enemy. If they persist in it, what else can we do?
I think the OP shouldn’t date him. Thank him nicely for the attention and move on. She can pray for him because we can pray for anyone, it doesn’t matter what they believe in. And she can’t just ask him to leave freemasonry just to date her and she can’t have expectations that he will love her so much that he will just leave it, baptize Catholic just before their beautiful wedding. That is unrealistic.

It’s probably easier and best to avoid being friends too, keeps the temptation away and stops there being any problems from the outset. Even a friend who is that far removed from what you want could be problematic. It’s tricky cos you may feel called to ‘help’ him but if that is the way you feel then tread very carefully and seek guidance from your priest. Can’t do any harm to go to adoration and seek guidance from Jesus, or pray in a quiet place.

It probably means he’s an old man. The Shriners march in the Memorial Day parade here, with their little cars, and to a man they are all older than me(61).

Yeah he seems like a sweet person. Just pray that I have the grace to turn him down without things hurting him too badly. I always feel guilty when I have to do this. I also narrowly dodged a bullet with a guy whose views pretty much painted him to be a white supremacist. Joys of online dating.

I don’t doubt that at all. It’s just I had a family member in the freemasons who knew a lot of members high up in the police and suggested that it could be a good career move to join up in some cases.

They are all about helping each other succeed, in careers and other areas, but what is the final cost on that assistance? I would rather be a Jew helped out by Jews, or a Catholic helped out by Catholics, or simply just to do, and love my job without any hooks.

Catholicism has had a dim view of freemasonry for centuries. I had a relative who was a freemason way back in our linage. I have his old pocket-watch buried somewhere. I am going to get rid of it one day or pass it along. Maybe sell it on ebay. I don’t even want it in the family.

I’m pretty sure there are Catholic dating sites or at least Christian ones. Good luck anyway

Maybe if you just tell him why you turn him down - freemasonry - he won’t get offended at all. Why should he? You are not criticising him personally, just his activities.
