Well, your guy was raised and baptized Catholic. So, if you still do pre-cana and he adheres to the Church’s teachings, then your marriage will be valid.

You could ask him to go through RCIA, to renew his understanding of the church’s teachings, since he may not understand them very well.
IMO, atheism is for the gullible. It takes more faith to believe in the nonexistence of God, than to believe in His existence. You would have to discount all proofs to the contrary, of which there are many, and of course you can’t prove something doesn’t exist.
I can say there are no spiders in my house, because I don’t see any, but I bet you could find some.

I do not recommend marrying someone who doesn’t believe. Take a break, give him a year off, to see where he is then. It might save you great heartbreak in the end.

Yes. We all make a choice to believe or not believe. However, sometimes those choices are conscious choices and sometimes they are unconscious choices. But a choice is still made.

I am such a hopeless romantic but I like this advice the most. I do not the original poster should ignore all the possible drawbacks. She should be honest and realistic with herself. There is a Saint Elizabeth Leseur who married an atheist. Isn’t there a passage in the bible about marrying between nonbelievers and believers. Do not ignore the honest advice from the other posters, but do not give up. Pray about it. I am so mushy. I love love.

It is illogical, but people do it all the time. Look at politics for example.

The evidence shows that Planned Parenthood is/was selling baby parts, but people like Hillary Clinton & Obama refuse to even look at the evidence.

Science shows that babies are human beings at conception, but people like the DNC Chair refuses to even acknowledge that her own children were human beings before they were born.

Other example:

It’s illogical to quit your job without having another one, especially when you have bills and responsibilities.

It’s illogical to smoke cigarettes, but that doesn’t stop people

It’s illogical not to wear a seatbelt, but people don’t.

it’s illogical to be a “new atheist” because it is impossible to prove that God does not exist (just like it’s impossible to prove that anything doesn’t exist), yet new atheists push their belief everyday. Belief that there is no God is more of a leap of faith than belief in God. There is physical evidence (scared scripture, other religions, etc.) to God’s existence, but the only “evidence” for no God is circumstantial evidence.

People do illogical things all the time. It’s what sets humans apart from Spock in Star Trek.

Our illogical behavior is a result of our free will and the fallen world.

I’d say to give it some time. Is this a crisis of faith or a more long term (possibly permanent) turn from faith? Does it look like he will continue to tolerate your faith? Can you tolerate his lack of faith? Other than belief in God, are your values compatible?

Who we fall in love with is an odd thing. I’d originally hoped for someone non-religious, so much so that Catholicism was one of 3 faiths I was originally selecting against back in my single days. But here I am, the nonbeliever married to my Catholic wife. Yes, we find each other’s views on faith to be incredibly odd, but we are more than our faith or lack of.
