Use the interest in the movie as an opportunity to evangelize. One Catholic writer thinks that the book is so popular because it makes sex out to sacred. He says we can take advantage of that popularity to introduce people to the Theology of the Body.

I didn’t read the book and will probably not see the movie. I rarely read fiction books. I did read some books about Mary Magdalen when Brown’s book came out.
The Roman Catholic Church is not blameless in the ability of the book to propogate an image of the Catholic Church as an institution of conspiracy. The Eastern Catholic churches seem to have been able to allow Mary Magdalen to remain unprostitutionalized over their history.

I hope it does come out in the movies though, because you know what happens when they make a movie out of a successful book! The movie turns out horrible and is usually a flop in the box office, and it turn gives the book a bad name

The book has caused some people to doubt their faith. I’d like to be at a theatre on opening night and offer people a little truth to take home with them. Is CA publishing anything? Does anyone know of somebody organizing something like this?

The front page of the Jan/Feb Catholic Answers newsletter is all about the Davinci Code movie. CA has been campaigning against this movie since early last year from what I can remember.
They have protested in the form of a massive letter-writing campaign to Ron Howard, the director.

I read the book, also read his other book Angels and demons. The thing to remember is that it is not just an anti-Catholic message being writen, Dan brown is attacking the whole of Christianity by saying that it is wrong. The book was so far out there, and if the movie is the same, it will be a sad day if people actually believe it.

Thanks for the information. It seems to me too late to write to Ron Howard, but I think the crowds going to the movie would be a great opportunity to evangelize.

- Educate yourself as much as possible on the errors of the book and movie and why they are dangerous to the faith of believers and the prejudices of non-believers. Here is a good place to start.

- Write your local theaters and ask them not to show it. Encourage others to do the same.
- Offer to give or sponsor a talk on the subject at your parish. Provide short, simple and accurate material rebutting it’s false claims. For example, I have posted articles at my parish. Here are some sample resources:

Why does everybody think that this movie holds elements of truth reality? Why is that when an anti catholic film comes out, no matter how rubbish the film is, the crowd goes wild?

I’m with Catholic Dude: Don’t Watch it. Don’t rent it.
The best, high-ground, protest is to simply live in a manner consistent with your own beliefs, and not partake in those things which are contrary to your beliefs.
For those considering a more up-front “protest”, consider that when Dogma came out oh-so long ago, the “best” advertizing for the movie actually came from the KoC protest ads they put into the papers.
If you go out of your way to empasise the “Anti-Catholic” content of the story, you are only making it more appealing to non-Catholics!
Having read the book, I do know there are elements which are “anti-Catholic”, but mostly they are simply “anti-Christian”, and noone I know read it and walked away with an increased awareness of anything to do with Catholicism. The stupid book was devoured by just about everyone at my Lodge (As I was a Mason att hat time), despite the scant and inaccurate masonic references in it.
Getting too defensive about it only encourages the attacks you are looking to avoid.
Dismiss it for the work of fiction with no relevance to Reality that it is, and you will do more to accomplish your goal than picketing the Theatre (which will only draw those who otherwise would also dismiss it simply to see what the fuss is about, to the detriment of Catholics).
Anyway, just my $0.02

I am looking at this book and movie as a way to open conversations. Educate yourself. I read the book just so I could have discussions about it with people who entertain the possiblilites introduced. I read ‘Cracking the Da Vinci Code’, which is loaded with tons of easy arguments against the ridiculous claims that are in the book.
I plan to get a ton of pamphlets, pay to see some other movie, then slip into the DaVinci Code and place the pamphlets on seats, in the bathrooms, the eating area, the arcade, wherever…it’ll be fun!
What cracks me up, is that this book is so badly written, imho, and that people think it’s a great book! I don’t think Dan Brown is a good writer. His writing reminds me of some pathetic wannabe. It’s a sad commentary on the literacy of our society!
