Has anyone else had people come up to them and tell them how ‘fascinating’ the DaVinci code is?

I am having problems, I have read the anti-tracts, but now there are spinoff books. And the people that I talk to seem to be coming from the basis that anything that is from the church, or commonly accepted, is just the ‘santized version’.

I am not great at this, but at least would try to defend the church as best I can. Often, I am just rendered speachless. The best I could come up with recently was ‘Before you judge the Church fathers, why don’t you read them too?’

Most of the time, I admit, I go the anti-confrontational no-comment approach. I’ll try to steer them toward something wholesome. Suggesting they read the early Church fathers is a good start. I’d have a hard time saying “that book is pure rubbish” not having read it. I know it is, and a lot of credible people have told me it is. I suppose I shall read it sometime so I can argue against it. Kind of how I eventually broke down and watched “Last Temptation of Christ” so I could finally make an argument against its heinousness.

The DaVinci code along with the bible are both good stories. I don’t know why people read so much into them…

Isn’t this book a work of fiction? I am sure I saw on CNN’s newsbanner that it is listed as fiction. I read the left behind series, interesting books and conjectures but…:ehh:

People are being sold the “DaVinci Code” as fact. They are saying that it was “really well researched,” and I agree…one would have to research very deeply in order to get all the facts so deliberately twisted!

Dan Brown is anti-Christian at his very core. He is saying in one breath that it’s fiction but when he is given the chance to speak he is talking about how “factual” it is! He obtained his information from rabidly anti-Christian and anti-Catholic books by authors with an adjenda against the faith. He has based his story on mythology and his sources have been discredited by Catholic, Protestant, and atheist scholars alike.

It’s not enough to just tell people that “it’s fiction.” Dan Brown has stated very publicly that his goal was to make people question the very foundation of their core beliefs.

I ask you…do you think that with this adjenda and deliberate misrepresentation, followed by people believing his word is gospel that “it’s only fiction” works as an argument?

I really encourage anyone who questions this to get “Cracking the DaVinci Code” It’s a great overview. “The Davinci Hoax” is far more in depth and I recommend it as well…it will open your eyes.

Those who accept the “sources” by Dan Brown withotu question have already discredited themselves and betrayed their own lack of critical thinking.

When put that way no saying it’s just fiction isn’t enough. It is a shame that so many may be fooled.:bigyikes:

You’re right…it’s really sad. I guess I never realized how few people are ever taught to think critically…or how many choose not to do so. People accept without question things they read, especially those things that are popularized.

I started reading…and now that I realize how much I never bothered to question in my lifetime…well…lets just say I’m catching up on 15 years or so of “critical thinking” for myself.

Ironically I had highschool teachers and profs in college that did their best to make us think critically…now here I am realizing that I never followed their advice…until this book offended me so much.

I never read the book…I tried to pick it up but it made my soul hurt so I had to put it down. I do really encourage anyone to find the good sources refuting the book…we all need to be ready for the movie to come out.

I hate to say this but I may actually see the movie…it’ll be shorter than the book so less torture…and then I’ll be directly ready to refute it.

I hate the idea of paying money for garbage I KNOW is garbage…but at the same time, I also know that if I’ve seen it I can catch the wave of people and by the grace of God help to stop the figurative tide.

On the other hand, we can all just pray that it completely flops and America has an instant conversion.

OK, sorry about the ramble. It’s a very bad habit of mine!

I read the book, my brother has it. What he seems to have done is have the professor telling girl all the ‘sacred feminine’ anti-catholic stuff and that it is supported by research & experts. He never names a real life expert but when reading the book the characters keep refering to ‘boundless research, history rewritten, discovering the truth’ and people accept it as real. It’s quite a compelling little trick and at one point I had to remind myself that they weren’t real experts.

I’ll stick with reading Catholicism A new study guide by Richard P. McBrien. I think it has been well researched!

I put him on my blocked list. I am glad he is suspending but can he come back under another name or do they log IP here? Hopefully he has a static IP!

I know a bunch girls who have read the book. They are all Catholic girls that are excited about it and now think they have been tricked all these years. I knew the claims made in the book and read much Catholic apoligetic info in relation to the story. The claims in the book are not hard to refute. Some of my friends and I have made it a point to learn to refute the book because we are watching are friends, who are girls, loose or alter their faith because of it. Much more, they are also trying to get theie friends to do the same. I tried to explain to these girls what is wrong with the book. They always come back with “did you read it” and “it’s just fiction”. So, I read it twice. Now, I try to discuss the problems with the book with them when it comes up. They are forced to talk about it when you tell them you read it. After you stump them with the issues they always resort to “it’s only fiction” no matter how much you explain to them that it passes off much fiction as fact. One was recently harolding the book claiming that it was good because Catholicism was crammed down her throat growing up. This book made her question her faith. She claims she has researched this issue very well. She says that she believes that Mary Magdalene was just as holy as Jesus. I asked her what she is basing this belief on considering that is nothing prior to the third century to even document that this belief existed. She claimed that there is nothing to dispute the belief either. I just gave up because she was getting emotional. It is clearly a femistic and female empowerment motive that is driving the interest within these girls. It is pretty hard to have a logical discussion about these issues when the subjects become emotional the instant they are challenged. No matter what logic we have used to try to reach them and how nice we have been with our approach, they always come back with the “it’s only fiction” defense. Their never willing to read or listen to anything you recommend. I can only wonder why their beliefs change and fall apart over a piece of fiction. I can hardly wait until the movie comes out.
