Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today is the Feast of St. John of the Cross; his poem the “Wayfaring Virgin” is one of my favorites and a beautiful meditation for Advent. I offer it to all today – it is so very approriate for this week, as we are seeking to acquire a better understanding of Mary:
St Louis wrote of Mary’s union with God and I’ve read his treatise on True Devotion many times. Yet – this morning, perhaps more than ever – I’m aware of how God wants to keep revealing more to us, the more we open our hearts to Him with Mary and as Mary did.
St. Louis de Montfort has written on our Reception of Holy Communion also in True Devotion (paragraphs 266 through 273). If we are unable to receive Jesus in Holy Communion every day, let us practice the devotion of “Spiritual Communion” which is to ask Jesus to come to us, in a special way, when we cannot receive Him sacramentally. Many saints have practiced this devotion, particularly in times of persecution or imprisonment, sickness, or in early days when Holy Communion was received only on Sunday. Today in some Mission countries, there is a great shortage of priests and many go longer than a week without Mass or Holy Communion.
Let us pray with our Mother today in Thanksgiving for the many opportunities we have been given to grow closer to Jesus through her. Let us pray to the Holy Spirit that we may grow like our Mother by welcoming her and her Son into our hearts, always.

As I read this poem today, I was thinking that we cannot understand Mary without Jesus. Of course we probably all know that Truth in some degree for without Jesus we can do nothing (cf John 15). However, when I ponder the union of Mary with the Trinity in the great mystery of the Incarnation, I realize the unique union Mary experienced being overshadowed by the Holy Spirit and conceiving in her womb by the power of God, the Father’s Only Begotten Son, the Word made Flesh in her womb – it is truly astounding!
