Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Yesterday, pondering St. Louis de Montfort’s urging “to rid oneself of the spirit of the world” and remembering Jesus’ words on the cost of discipleship, both yesterday and today, my husband and I had some “unexpected trials”, with our internet service. I was grateful to remember other words from scripture to help us, especial these words from Romans 8:
As we heard in 1 John 2: 15-17: “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” Our time in this world is brief, and so we need to remember Whom we choose to love in this world; and Whom we choose to serve. We cannot serve two masters. When unexpected trials come we have a great “opportunity” to see for ourselves what and/or Who is really important to us. If God permits something, do I say “OH NO” right away, or do I ask God’s help to cooperate with what He has permitted? Do I look for what God wants? Or do I moan about something I wanted that has been “disrupted” or even “taken away from me”. There are definitely thieves and robbers in this world.
One thing I’ve learned is that God is able to give an increase in wisdom to us, when we ask to do His Will. Another thing is to see more clearly the Truth of His Word in James 1: 2-4. God’s grace enables us to grow in patience through trials. There really is a joy in knowing God is at work in us to transform us more and more into the likeness of Jesus, through our Mother Mary and the power of His Holy Spirit. Truly, there is joy for us as there is all the fruit of the Holy Spirit for us in Jesus, Whom Mary always brings to us. Jesus is the “Fruit of her womb”. Let us remain in the crossing of her arms close to Him.

If we are to “rid ourselves of the spirit of the world” we need not go looking for suffering, but only begin to be willing to accept the suffering God permits in our lives. We live in a world of persons who, like ourselves, have darkened intellects and weakened wills. Some have yet to hear the Good News of Jesus who has freed us from the power of darkness and given us His Holy Spirit to bring us into the Complete Truth (Who is Jesus – our Way, our Truth and our Life, as baptized Christians). There are evil doers in the world, despite the beauty of God’s creation. There are some who seek to do others harm.
