My spainish teacher showed us a video about the mayans in my Spainish Class and it showed the celebration of dia de la muerto (day of the dead) that took place in a Catholic Church it showed the Priest and the Eucharist. After the Mass was over the documentary said that the mayan elder steps in and they pray to the ancient spirits and stuff thats pagan and kiss a skull and process around the city they believe that the spirits come back to visit that night. Does the Church actually let the people do this in the *Catholic Churches * in some mexican cities? The Chruch does not believe spirits come back so whats this about?

**God ** Bless

Day of the Dead is in essence a syncretization of Indian beliefs about death into the Catholic Church. Because the country of Mexico is so heavily Indian, these beliefs are not going away, but the Church makes use of them to get people to Mass on this day.

No the Church doesn’t let people do this. If this happened, u should contact your local priest. All that is indian tradition. In fact, making a “altar de muertos” which is an altar for the dead shoudnt also be allowed to be made inside the Church. Unfortunately, some priests allow this 😦

not quite, please cite the law
almost every church down here will have an altar de los muertos in church during the novena which begins All Souls day (ends tonight I think). So will most traditional homes. It is entirely in keeping with Catholic teaching on prayers for the dead. I personally would not give 2 cents for a video or presentation shown in a history class in a state or public school or college, since inaccuracy can pretty much be guaranteed.

Ya i dont really trust the movie either it but see lets assume the movie is right it said the people prayed to the ancient gods of the mayans and stuff for the dead and that is definatlely againist the Church so if that is the case the Church would have to not allow them to do that in the Church or to still hold that belief and not confess it at Confession or something like that.
