Does anyone know something about the De La Salle Brothers i.e. do they pray the Liturgy of the Hours like priests etc do? Someday be a priest under the same order etc? I am from the Philippines and yet to send them an email expressing my desire to join.

I’ve read this before thanks! Would the DLS Brothers be different than, say, Franciscan brothers? Would they live together in a community?

The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, their correct name, is a religious congregation. Their function is to teach. They do not ordain members. Therefore, all are brothers.

The obligation to recite the the Divine Office is not reserved to priests. Members of institutes of consecrated life are obliged to say the Office, too. As the De La Salle brothers have the external, active apostolate of teaching they are not bound to the full choral office like, say, monastics are.

I used to work in a De La Salle college and was very happy there. The few brothers I knew were extremely nice men and very good teachers.

Thanks for the correction. Do they live in the same place like a brothers’ residence of some sort? Are they paid because they also teach or some other form of payment for their services?

Yes, they live together in community. No, they are not paid. The congregation meets all their needs. Teaching is what they do and like all religious they are not paid for their work.

One may not be a priest and be a member of this order. Indeed, de la Salle himself, because he was a priest, never was a member of the congregation he founded!
