Can a Deacon, not yet ordained priest, can give homily? isnt it that homily is for ordained clergy only?

Since a deacon is a recepant of Holy Orders and ordained a Deacon he may give a Homily–Deacons, Priests, and Bishops may deliver one but nobody else may.

Permanent Deacons, or Deacons who are not in the Process of moving on to becoming a Priest give Homilies. They are indeed ordained and do much more than that. They administer many of the Sacraments as well.

It would be good to read up on the Deaconate and to offer prayers for all our wonderful Deacons and their families. What a wonderful blessing it is for us to have them.

Transitional deacons can as well.

Our deacons are wonderful examples of devout Catholic men. However, their homilies are, for me, poorly delivered unsubstantive fluff. Why oh why does a deacon preach while the priest sits and listens from the presider’s chair?

Deacons preach for the same reason priests preach: it’s part of their function. Not all deacons (just as not all priests) are good homilists. Perhaps if you mentioned this to your deacon the next time he preaches – gently and constructively, of course, you’d get more substance and less fluff.

Ditto-the deacons in our diocese were taught to spend hours in preparation for their one homily a month. Our busy pastors have limited time.

At our parish, we have two foreign priests who have very thick accents and are unfamiliar with the American culture and it is difficult for the general congregation to understand them particularly with a microphone. So our deacons are assigned to preach for them, and the parish family is so relieved to be able to relate and understand.

A Deacon IS an ordained clergyman. They are Ordained by the Bishop in the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

They are Ordained to Serve, to Read the Gospel, to Preach and to distribute Holy Communion.

A priest, who is always ordained a deacon first, is Ordained to Offer the Sacrifice of the Mass and to Absolove Sin.

The ability to preach is a gift. A lot of priests lack the same gift, so I wouldn’t generalize the deacons.

Good point. We do the same for limited English speaking priests. A majority of vocations are now coming from non-English speaking countries. This trend is expected to continue.

We had a transitional deacon who will be ordained later this month. At first quite honestly his homilies were not as good as our priest who is a fabulous homilist. But after a time his delivery improved greatly and he always had a well thought out and orthodox message. So he was a real blessing to the parish and I certainly miss him now that he is preparing for ordination. So if you do have a deacon giving homilies, just give him some time.

It’s called practice. Do you think that the ability to preach comes magically with the ordination into priesthood? There is no substitute for on the job training in this regard, and you should feel blessed to be in the presence of a person who has chosen a religious vocation and is potentially a future priest and possibly a future bishop or pope.

I do feel blessed. Practice may improve delivery, but it will not impart solid doctrinal and Scriptural knowledge. Unfortunately, the folks in the pew hungry for content beyond the 6th grade level will go elsewhere. And this saddens me.

Sometimes laity are allowed to give reflections, not homilies. The laity is usually those in formation to be deacons both p or t.

God Bless

We are fortunate to have great homilies from all our Priests and Deacons. Deacons play a very important role in our church and we should all be greatful that these men (and their wives) are willing to
give so much time and talent for all of us. I’ve heard lots of Priests that could have used more time in the speech class, yet the message still gets through. Maybe the Holy Spirit is guiding them?

Love and Peace:)

Deacon is ordained clergy.

"The homily, which is given in the course of the celebration of Holy Mass and is a part of the Liturgy itself, 'should ordinarily be given by the Priest celebrant himself. He may entrust it to a concelebrating Priest or occasionally, according to circumstances, to a Deacon, but never to a layperson. In particular cases and for a just cause, the homily may even be given by a Bishop or a Priest who is present at the celebration but cannot concelebrate”. (Redemptionis Sacramentum, 64)
