Why do deacons have to be older than priests? A friend of mine was just ordained a priest and is only 25 He was in seminary for 4 years right out of college (got his bachelors at 19).

The age rule of 35 only applies to married deacons. It is there to help insure that the Deacon is sufficently established in his secular employment and marriage to effectively handle the additional responsibilities of the Diaconate.Why do deacons have to be older than priests? This is why, in the Orthodox Church, the canonical age of ordination is 30, and most bishops will not ordain an unmarried man who is not a monk before the age of 40.
“Priest,” btw, is a contraction of the Greek word “presbyter” (through the middle form “prester”) which properly means “elder”.

In addition to being “established” in his career and marriage, a cleric should, before receiving the laying on of hands, have shown his ability to “manage” his household. You can demonstrate wisdom/competence far more quickly when you don’t have any of those spousal/parental skills to prove over time.The age rule of 35 only applies to married deacons. **1 Tim 3:**4-5 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)
And for our particular case of deacons 1 Tim 3:12 A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well.
