Probably the wrong term for it but cannot think of the proper term.

My priest today said there were three funerals in my church this week and the Deacon was celebrating one of them for him.

I didn’t know deacons could do this?

I had a professed religious sister preside over my mother’s funeral (which was at the funeral home).

Note: this is not allowed everywhere & it doesn’t have to be a Religious.

It’s only allowed in dioceses without enough priests & deacons. In those places, select lay people are approved to perform the funeral rites.

God Bless

I had a memorial, with no Mass, no church and no body, for my husband in the state where he worked, so his work mates could attend as he was buried 5 hours away in his hometown. The church sent a nice deacon who conducted a prayer service with readings, and arranged a bunch of Masses to be said later for my husband. This is a good task for a deacon to handle. For the service at the other funeral home with the body, I did get a priest so he could do the blessings and such.

Yes, they can. But I don’t think popular because most practicing Catholics want a funeral mass and a good number of active deacons have day jobs
