Yes, they can. But I don’t think popular because most practicing Catholics want a funeral mass and a good number of active deacons have day jobsProbably the wrong term for it but cannot think of the proper term.
My priest today said there were three funerals in my church this week and the Deacon was celebrating one of them for him.
I didn’t know deacons could do this?
