Hello,
I’m a Methodist seminary student (I just completed a Master of Arts in Theological Studies) who this last year decided (after a long journey) that I was being called home to Rome. I’m excited about crossing the Tiber, but I’m trying to look at ministry opportunities in the Catholic church and see what God might be calling me to.
In particular I’m considering the order of deacon, since I would still have the ability to preach and perform some sacraments. However, one of the things that I’ve been reading a lot about is the role of the deacon wife (I’m married with two children). My initial impression is that they serve a huge role, almost bigger than what I would find in a pastor’s wife in my Protestant congregations.
However, in my situation, my wife is very un-interested in being the center of attention in any way. She’s very supportive of me, and my ministry goals, however, she does not feel called to any form of formal ‘church’ ministry, preferring to simply serve in small, quiet roles like soup kitchens or helping children. When I mentioned how much emphasis the deacon’s wife seems to have she became very uncomfortable with the idea.
So my question to this community is, what types of roles have you seen deacon wives in? Are there some who stick to the sidelines and try to stay out of things, or are most required to be heavily involved in the ministry of the church?
