Dealing with Aftermath of Occult

A long time ago at a Halloween party, I had my palm read. Years later I realized how wrong this was and I went to confession over my sin. Now it seems like perhaps what the palm reader said could be coming true. Would you steer your life away from what the palm reader said even if meant your life was going in a very positive direction?

Not particular to me, but I know of at least three women who play with Ouiji boards and the Ouiji board predicted the names of their husbands.

I would say stay away from that stuff! Dont concern yourself with what those things may have told you, and try and keep your mind off of that palm reading. (its good that you confessed it)

While the occult can indeed be dangerous in many cases, people who read palms usually make generic readings that can apply to anyone. So maybe you didn’t get someone really dangerous, just someone good at lying? I pray that that is the case.

The devil, it is said, uses truth, or the appearance of truth (verisimilitude) to lure one into falsity and error. Assuming this was genuinely a demonic inspiration, and not only a coincidental reading, it is possible that it was made similar enough to truth to bother you and to disturb you, or, to thereby entice you to pay attention to other private revelations and from there to lead you into a dark and dangerous path away from the revealed fullness of the faith.

Now, you realize that this was a bad thing. God bless you. Have no worries and no fears. Pray to the blessed Virgin (who the demons abhor and fear more than any other creature) and to St. Michael the Archangel for protection from the demonic. Leave it there. Satan has already been defeated by the cross. He can only get in to the degree you let him in-- and by now, you’ve closed the door.

Besides, listen to St. John of the Cross on revelations, locutions and visions-- if we are given any type of special revelation by God, we are meant to forsake it utterly. By becoming attached to any revelation, we do damage to our spiritual path which is to be united with God. Besides, he says, it would be too troublesome and time consuming to decipher the good from the bad (i.e., genuine from demonic) revelations.

If this is his advice about revelations which may possibly be good, imagine that he would tell you to utterly ignore anything produced from evil means such as this. It will do you no good.

Merely do this-- judge your life and your actions by this standard, “am I following God’s will?” As long as you are doing that, even if your life is similar to what this says, you are doing well. But give the reading no credence.

Mixed emotions about this. If it can be proven that evill truly lurks in the attempts of contacting the occult, then this proves goodness exists as well. Which, as a doubter, makes me want to buy a Ouiji board. In other words, if evil can directly contact me, possibly there is a God.

Because by opening ourselves to the demonic, we endanger our souls. Yes, God has won, and will win, but the question isn’t whether He will win, but whether we will share in His victory. Jesus Christ Victor is a beautiful thing, but a terrible thing to the damned, I would suppose.

About 6 years ago a life long girlfriend of mine came for a visit so I took her downtown for a girl’s night out. We walked into this funny little bar/grill type place and ordered some wine and munchies. In the corner was a woman with tarot cards and for $20 you could get a reading. Feeling brave, we did so.

We have both confessed and regret it. We’ll never do it again.

But let me tell you - she was right on the money. She said some things to me that no one could have known. She was specific too - not generalities - it was creepy.

I share this with you b/c I believe there are those out there who really can do things like this - granted for every one of them, there are 100 fakes - but anyway, those few that really have the ability to do this do not get their ability from God. 'nuff said.

That is why it is wise to stay away from all of it.

To answer the OP’s question - I would not steer my life based on an experience like this. I would (and did) just put the experience in perspective, and go on with life looking to God and faith as my guide. I did not factor in this experience when making any life decisions.

As someone who used to mess with this stuff (palmistry, fortune telling, ouija boards) before I converted, I con only advise you to give it a wide berth. I would also recommend that you advise your friends not to ‘play’ with ouija boards anymore either. I speak from experience, no good ever comes from using a ouija board.

Put your trust in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not in cards, or palms, or trying to predict what the future will bring.

Why would God let our eternal destiny be subject to how our weaknesses can be overcome by outside forces?

If you were witness to your toddler daughters temptation to take candy from a stranger, would let her eternal destiny depend on her decision?

My children hate to hear me tell them “No” too. Sometimes they even throw tantrums and make it clear that they don’t like me very much and wish that I would just disappear. But I know better than they. I can see the bigger picture while they get caught up in the details. Even though they feel entitled to “X”, I know that it is not in their best interests and I withhold it from them for their own good. As they mature, I know they will look back and see that even though they hated hearing the word, it was always said with love.
