Has anyone here read Dear and Glorious Physician: A Novel About St. Luke by Taylor Caldwell? It’s an older book but still in print. I just wondered if it was worth getting? Wondered what Catholics think of it, mainly. It gets good reviews on Amazon.

Thanks.

I read it forever ago, so I don’t remember much detail. What I do remember is that I loved it.

It is super-long, over 500 pages. I loved it–I felt like it was one of those books you don’t want to end that kind of doesn’t!–but my brother-in-law hated it. Our library had it, though, so I didn’t have to buy it. I think if I had to do it again, I’d put a library hold on it and read it when the libraries open (which ours are beginning to do for online holds and curbside pick-up).

I have it but have not started to read it - I have this habit of buying books…

Read it years ago. Also “Great Lion of God’, same author, about St. Paul. Some 50 years ago as a young teen I was very moved by long and Biblical stories, “Quo Vadis’ and Ben Hur” and “The Robe” as well as the two above. Also loved Thomas B Costain’s “The Silver Chalice” (side note to that, the movie made of same had the first screen appearance leading man of Paul Newman!)

And then read Great Lion of God, which is about St. Paul. Another Taylor Caldwell book I loved was Grandmother and the Priests.

Thanks, folks, for your thoughts. The library is also a good idea. I think I’ll try there first. It does seem like something I’d probably enjoy.
