This is a letter I am sending to my Bishop.

You might consider doing something similar?

PJM m.c “Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus”
What we are called to be and what we pray to become

Dear Bishop,

I read recently that “over 100 Bishops have spoken out on the issue of Abortion, and our Catholic and Christian obligation to “Vote Pro Life, in America’s written Press, during the just passed election year.” (this list on a seperate post"only about 100 Bishops)

The article was authored by, Mr. Deal W. Hudson who has listed by name and Diocese the number of American Prelates who have spoken out on the Issue of the requirement of a Catholic Pro Life Vote, in the printed press. I thank God that the Florida Bishops Issued a Joint Statement, and I have also read several of the articles you personally have written. Thank you and God bless you!

I am writing this letter not in anger, not even as a criticism, but as an advisory of what I see as a window of opportunity.

The USCCB web site, list some 428 Bishops, Cardinals and retired Bishops. So even if Mr. Hudson’s list missed another 100 Bishops, that still means about half did not, for a multitude of reasons, participate in the office of teaching, at least in the public press, on this issue of Grave importance. Again, not a criticism, just an observation. Might one assume that a similar accounting of priest would reflect again that about half, aggressively taught this Grave Catholic Obligation?

The Church cannot tell us who to vote for, but can, and indeed must tell us whom we cannot vote for, based on historical evidence, if available, on issues of Life and Death.

I have read in several published reports, including the day after the election by “USA Today,” that over fifty percent of Catholics (at least professed to be Catholics) voted for President Elect Obama, despite the great efforts of a great number of Bishops and priest to make us aware of his proven “Pro death” record. This number has remained roughly the same with Mr. Gore, Mr. Kerry and now, Mr. Obama. Clearly the Church’s teaching the message of Life, is either not getting out, is not being understood, or is being rejected for personal preferences. It is at base, an issue of humble obedience.

I am of the strong belief that the prevalent philosophy of “The Fundamental Option,” written about by all recent Popes, is at root, the issue that needs to be addressed. The professed Christian Community, in the same report, only had a thirty-five percent vote for Mr. Obama. Obviously a great many Catholics no longer understand, or accept, the mandate of humble obedience to Church Teachings.

Good Bishop, this is the window of opportunity of which I speak. I humbly plead, beseech, and beg you to turn the tide of ignorance; willful or not, and make it a top priority to make every human, and God assisted effort to insure that this act of defiance, that reflects so poorly, at the very moral foundation of Christ Church be changed. This Grave assault, on the Church’s mandate to teach, and the absolute requirement for all Catholics to listen, needs to be a top priority that you place on everyone, who in anyway, is involved in Catholic Religious Instruction. Priest, Deacons, Religious, Educators, RCIA and Conformation instructors and well as all involved in our Catholic Schools. It should be much more than an option by this called by God group, to unify behind your call for specific instruction on obedience to Church teaching, and Life Issues.

The bible in any given “Church Year” affords many opportunities. Readings about “the body,” about “the temple,” about life and death being only God’s domain, and why this must be so, provides much fertile ground for teaching, humble obedience, and the significance of Life issues, and one’s Grave Moral responsibility to understand that Life issues have to take precedence over Party Line voting, or even other existing issues that at there core, are too, Life issues.

For example: Immigration is a people issue.
Taxes are a people issue.
The war is a people issue.
Issues of Medical Care are people issues.
Jobs are a people issue.
The sate of our economy is a people issue.

But “all do nothing for the child who will not live to see the light of day.” Life can’t be just about us, what we want, what we prefer. We are members of a community responsible to each other. We have a mandate from Christ Himself to be obedient to Church teachings and to support life.

Dear Bishop please use the power of your office to mandate and influence in every way possible the turn around of the Catholic Pro Life Vote before the next election. It is the right thing to do. Not only does such an action support life, but it also teaches obedience.

The topic of teaching informed and humble obedience as it relates to all Church teachings needs to become a priority of your Decipleship. This is a great topic for retreats, for Education seminars, and a worthy topic of regular homilies.

May God bless you and continue to guide you in your efforts to share the Good News. Jesus Christ is Lord!

Know that you are in my prayers,

PJM m.c.

The Church told us to think…

The said “Pro-Life” candidate’s party has lead us back as a nation to a place where abortions are once again increasing (as of 2006 for the 20 something group - my guess is that the 2007 data will be worse).

Even if you want to ignore that fact, that conservative fiscal policies are killing more babies no matter what they “say.” Then I urge you to consider the what our Pope has recently said, yesterday I believe, in regards to life. A quick search should allow you to find it.

My reading of it is that Life is important at any stage and we must consider our commitment as Catholics to that life.

Given, abortion is the biggest issue because of the numbers but there are a large number of children who are killed each year or allowed to die because we won’t provide prenatal care for their mothers. Our infant mortality rate is abysmal compared to other western nations. There are a number of other issues though in regards to life that our stated “Pro-Life” party are on the opposite sides of where we should be. I heard one person go so far as to say that they truly didn’t care for babies once they were born… it’s harsh but their policies often prove it’s true.

The abortion and life issues are very complex is what the Church and Bishops, and I believe even our Pope, are saying. That is why they didn’t say… vote this way. Because under careful analysis the date shows that a good argument can be made either way.

I don’t believe anyone would say that in general a Pro-Choice candidate is a friend of the Pro-Life movement. But could they be? In regards to human life and quality of life… yea possibly.

Thus I believe the Church has to guide us and encourage pray, not mandate doctrine in regards to politics.

I do know that Benedict 16th has said that every time the Church becomes too political she looses sight of her true goals, which is to preach the message of Jesus Christ.

Just stuff to think about…

Joe

The lack of logic in this argument seems aparent. President Bush
is NOT preforming abortions.Nor has he passed any legislation that makes it easier to procure an abortion. If I am wrong, please provide the evidence to support your position.

Have you forgoten about his two Supreme Court appointments? They prevented the continuation of Clintons “Patrial Birth Abortions” from being a law of the the land.? God bless you.

My dear friend in Christ would you please be so kind as cut and paste what ever it is you think His Holiness said, so that we may affirm your understanding? Thanks!🙂

Again, if your going to make such statements please support them with specific facts or web addresses so we can understand the validity of what you claim is truth. I’d like to know what I am dealing with before I respond. So once again, please help me out here.

My dear friend in Christ, you couldn’t be more wrong and here is the evudence to prove it: From The Catechesim of The Catholic Church.
2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:
FYI: “GRAVE OFFENSE” means Alway’s a Mortal sin!
2272 Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. “A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae,” “by the very commission of the offense,” and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law. The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.
2322 From its conception, the child has the right to life. Direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, is a “criminal” practice (GS 27 § 3), gravely contrary to the moral law. The Church imposes the canonical penalty of excommunication for this crime against human life.
My dear friend, this is what your Pope. your Church and I pray, your Bishop are teaching. Amen!👍
I don’t believe anyone would say that in general a Pro-Choice candidate is a friend of the Pro-Life movement. But could they be? In regards to human life and quality of life… yea possibly.
Again my friend, try as I might, I fail to see the logic in this argument. A great many “Pro Choice” candidates; PE Oboma most definetly are not simply "right to choose-P.L.) they are out-right PRO DEATH!

And being so, one would be less than honest with themselves to think that one who is this callious about the death a tiny innocent, helpless babies, gives a … about any life issue.😊
Thus I believe the Church has to guide us and encourage pray,
not mandate doctrine in regards to politics.

Well I agree with what I highlignted. But again you don’t get what the Church is Teaching. THOU SHALL NOT KILL! is God’s Commandment. The Church must, absolutely MUST teach with the Moral Authority and Convictions of Christ Himself.

The Church does not tell anyone “how to vote.” But they MUST, are gravely morrally to tell WHAT (NOT WHO!!! WHAT!!! we cannot support.
I do know that Benedict 16th has said that every time the Church becomes too political she looses sight of her true goals, which is to preach the message of Jesus Christ.
I have read all of the vatican II Documents, most of the writtings of JP II, and a great many teachings of Benedict XVI, and have never caome across such a statement. Once again, please provide proof of your claims.

Joe

Well Joe, heres the truth, so now you too have something to think about.

I’m very grateful for your post! Thanks,
PJM m.c
