Death, Heaven, Purgatory, Hell and Final Judgment

Hi All
So I just got done reading part one of my catechism (yay). I have some questions/clairifications.

1. So when we die, based on whether or not we have committed a mortal sin, OUR SOULS enter either heave D), purgatory () or hell () correct?
2. If the above is correct, why the need for another judgement? I know the final judgement is when our bodies will be reunited with our souls but is it also a judgment for those who have not yet died?
3. Is the final judgment also a time for Jesus Christ to determine so to speak the fates of those in purgatory?

Sorry if these are really basic questions but I just want to make sure I understand 100%

I gotta admit, if I made it to Purgatory, I’d be ing, not :shrug:ing, since that means I’m on the way to Heaven! But basically, yes. Note that if you have only venial sins on your soul, and/or you have not completed your earthly satisfaction for forgiven sins, then THAT’S what sends you to Purgatory.

Yes, Jesus “will come again to judge the living and the dead” (from the Creed), and we will be united with physical Glorified bodies like the one that Jesus had after the Resurrection.

Sorry if these are really basic questions but I just want to make sure I understand 100%

The fates of those in Purgatory have already been decided as soon as they get there - they are “saved,” i.e. they aren’t going to Hell and they’re on their way to Heaven.

Yup :yup:

Well, the last judgment happens at the end of time. And the differences between the two is that the body will be reunited with the soul. So that’s the innate differences between the two.

Sort of. Remember Purgatory is completely temporary. Purgatory is all about purification of souls who died in God’s friendship but still in a state of venial (small) sin or the punishment due to sin. The goal of Purgatory is basically for those people to go to Heaven.

Actually 2 was always tricky for me. But don’t worry, this is site is all about asking questions. A lot of people have asked the same 3 questions in the past.

Too oversimplified. Committing a mortal sin will only send a person to hell if they remain unrepentant and the sin confessed and absolved.

The rest you have essentially correct.

Yep.

No. Those in Purgatory will go to Heaven once cleansed of whatever sinful attachments they died with. See Biblical and Jewish Traditional Beliefs About Purgatory

One of the reasons for the second final judgment, the general judgment, is that all creatures will be present. This, of course, includes the angels, saints, souls, and fallen angels. We will all be able to understand the effects of our actions and how we may have helped others or hurt them by leading them toward sin. We will rejoice in God’s mercy. The demons will testify about their role in tempting us. We will have complete understanding of ourselves and our lives in the same way that God understands us.

We are judged immediately,then receive what our lives have merited.

The body is united to the soul and judged publicly for justice sake.Why the body?Because the body is the vessel that once held the soul and helped to commit the sins or good deeds.So those who were not done justice in this life and died with false accusations against their good name will be redeemed for all to see and vice versa.

It stands to reason,if you’re in Purgatory,the next step is heaven.
