Ok, so as some of you may already know from my signature, I prefer the darker way to decorate. Dark rich colours, old art, old furniture etc. Anyway, I got this really good idea for my living room and wasn’t sure if it was right.

I want to but tarot cards in picture frames and put them on the wall. I like the pictures in a particular deck. The artist is very good. I wasn’t sure if this appropriate because I also want to have a cross or a crucifix in the same room.

I did some research on Tarot and discovered it was used to play a game like bridge. It wasn’t used for divination. I personally never believed in fortune telling.

What do you think? Would it be right?

Thanks

So long as you aren’t intending anything spiritual by putting up the Tarot cards, I see nothing wrong with it. I prefer darker, “gothic” imagery as well, and I also have a number of Egyptian religious images and items as decoration.

One thing I’d make sure of, however, is that the Tarot deck wasn’t “blessed” in any way, as many are. The people who bless Tarot decks generally aren’t invoking Holy entities, and I wouldn’t want something consecrated to demons (even unknowingly) in my house.

You can do a bit if digging and find some amazing Holy Cards - might be a nice substitute 🙂

I don’t recommend it. True, one can devise card games using tarot cards. One can also use a wall crucifix or statue of a saint as a murder weapon. The fact that things can be used in a manner not typically associated with that object does not change the essential nature of that object. Tarot cards, even if not used as media to superstitiously attempt to speak with the dead or other spirits contrary to the will of God, are still by their nature tools for that purpose. You don’t want to keep something in which Satan has a foothold on your walls.

Grace & Peace!

Sarc, regarding the tarot, an interesting (very long, and amazing) read is “Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeticism” by the Unknown Author. It features a wonderful afterword by Hans Urs von Balthazar who died just a few days before he was scheduled to be made a cardinal. Benedict XVI and HUvB started a magazine together, incidentally.

I would strongly say don’t do it. Although their history may be fairly benign as you say, the current cultural context is one of the occult and fortune telling. You have to go with how they are currrently understood. These objects are typically used for evil purposes as fortune telling, horiscopes and occult practices are considered mortal sins. It doesn’t matter how good they look. You may also cause an aquaintance to think badly about you, which would harm your relationship. A decoration is just not worth your soul or someone elses. The small reward of a beautiful decoration is not worth the cost.

Thanks for your replies and links so far.

Kage_er, I actually was going to that in the hall way…lol…but good idea…I just want some variety.

I know the cards won’t be “blessed” in any way. I’m buying them off amazon…unless amazon has some creepy coven in their warehouse…

Sarc,
Maybe I am the only one to catch this: Your 1st post was on using Tarot Cards then your following post was on the reading you did! LOL

Sorry couldn’t resist.

I believe that whatever shouldn’t be done or shown in the presence of a crucifix, shouldn’t be at all (example: wearing a crucifix when posing to a porn photo is profanation, but wearing one when making love with a husband is a good thing to do). A bit as if one didn’t want Jesus to see something. Maybe try thinking this way?
