…I am officially a pre-law student! This past weekend, I received an acceptance letter from the university I have so wanted to transfer to! It’s very difficult to get in, and also, since I had applied late in the summer, I did NOT think my chances were very high at all. In addition, I was aiming for pre-law, since I have realized during my three years in college that my true passion is law.

I am elated. For the first time in a long time, I can say that I feel happy…and I wanted to share this piece of news with all of you. I know that I have been a sad sack for a long while now, but I’ve always found comfort here on CAF.

But I do ask you to continue to pray for me. I’m very nervous as I begin this new stage in my life (this university has a student population of 27,000, whereas my previous school had 1,100). Please pray that I can fully come out of my shell, continue to do well in school, and most importantly, make choices pleasing to Our Lord.

Also, if you have any advice on how I could make this a smoother adjustment, I’d like to hear some opinions. Any tips/tricks that you followed? I’m obviously no stranger to college life, but I kind of want to start fresh, with a positive attitude.

My advice- being a bigger university it may seem like a very lonely place if you don’t know anyone. I suggest looking into any clubs or groups you could join as a starting point for socialising. And get in at the start, when everyone is on equal footing; if you join later, they will have all formed bonds and cliques and it will be harder to fit in.

Well done to you, that’s an achievement. I hope you find it interesting and fulfilling, and that you make some good friends there.

I agree with underacloud about joining some groups where you can meet people with similar interests to yourself, that’s a good start. Just give yourself time and don’t try to do everything in the first week!

I don’t want to be the downer here so please don’t take it that way.

I do want to say, however, make sure you REALLY like law- as it is, not as it is often portrayed. I am a lawyer and is is vastly different than most people think. It is often a solitary, stressful, consuming profession. Recent changes in the profession have really brought changes to salaries and employment prospects.

I think law is great, but many, many people go in to it thinking one thing only to spend $100k and burn out in a few years or are unable to find a job all together. Then they are in trouble x 2.

My advice is this: Spend your undergrad summers working in law. Whether that is answering phones at a small firm, being a file clerk at a larger one, or simply asking if you can volunteer around an office in any other way. If you see what it really is, including the pay, client demands, hours, and lifestyle- and you still love it- GO FOR IT. If you are in doubt at all, get another job for a couple years and then re-examine. Doubt in law school will sink you. So do something else for a couple of years and then re-examine. You won’t go wrong.

Work hard in undergrad and enjoy it. And take a short time and enjoy your good news. You set a goal and were disciplined enough to achieve it. Sounds like you can be successful in whatever endeavor you choose.
