I recently inquired about the exception clause in Matthew 19:9 and I think I am now starting to understand the Catholic positoin. I, however, read this on the subject:
***The original Greek word translated as “unchastity” (except it be for unchastity) in Matthew’s gospel, is translated as “fornication”, “lewd conduct”, and even “adultery” in some translations of the Bible. “Fornication” certainly does not fit the bill as it means unlawful sexual activity between unmarried people. And “adultery” does not fit into the context as the Pharisees were trying to get Jesus to take sides in an argument among themselves – regarding the differing opinions on the subject by Rabbi Shammai and Rabbi Hillel. * **
And now have the following question: Who were these two Rabbis, what did each believe, and where can I learn more about them?
