Have they pulled their kids out of public school? The number of child sex offenders and incidences of child sex abuse in schools is far higher.

Sorry, but public schools aren’t run by a single overarching organization that move offenders to other schools or retire them to a school-funded home.

As usual, it’s the cover-up.

That’s irrelevant. The point is that the number of child sex offenders and incidences of child sex abuse in schools is far higher.

No one is denying that the cover-ups are heinous.

Of course there is no excuse for anyone to abuse a child sexually or physically, however, I believe that in the 60’s and before, many of these priests were sent for psychological help as it was believed they could be cured. We know much more today, so it appears this added to those priests being returned to a parish, when they were “cured”.

As a former Episcopalian I recall the Rector, married with children, was sexually abusing boys and he was moved to another parish. I don’t believe any records were ever kept. We must remember that there are so many anti catholics and the media who are trying to destroy the Church, that all other churches, schools, scouts, etc. are ignored for the same abuse.

Also in my own personal life, my daughter at 3 and 3 1/2 were sexually abused by two different care takers. The police did nothing and took the word of the wife of one of them, who lied and I had the proof. They made excuses for ignoring the trauma she went through. Also one of my granddaughters was molested by her own father and CPS, police and the court did nothing to him, except try to force her to reunite with him. If it had been a neighbor or stranger he would be in prison. This world is so turned upside down. I have no trust in the justice system and don’t believe much of what the media says.

Many of those priests also had been dead for many years and could not defend themselves against accusations.

From my understanding the Catholic Church today is one of the most safe places for children. The Church did not abuse teenagers or children, individuals did and hopefully there are tests in seminary that will expose those who go into the priesthood for an evil purpose.

Yes we need to pray for the priests, that honest people will treat them with respect and not lump all priests together.

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

What an excellent post Bernadette! 👍

Notice also how the gay agenda has influenced the UN commission. They repeatedly refer to “child abuse” when in fact something like 90% or more of the cases were homosexual encounters with underage teen boys. Why don’t they call it what it is: homosexual abuse of underage teen boys. Ah, that would never work in today’s gay world.

Yes individual bishops were responsible for very bad judgement, despite their own observation of REPEATED sex offending priests. Yes, I don’t doubt that some of them were more interested in covering up a scandal then protecting the young. Yes, I DO believe certain bishops SHOULD be held accountable.

But there is no denying the media bias against the Catholic Church. Bill Maher’s sewer mouth is constantly spewing on TV. The liberal media is always ready to vilify the Church. In a world of filth, promiscuity and infidelity, what can we expect? But we must not let it obscure the Truth.

Thank you for your kind words. I am just a simple Catholic and although know the faith, I am not one to memorize dates nor Early Church Father’s letters, I am aware of what they believed.

I see the world becoming more and more evil every day as do many Catholics and most evangelical/fundamentalist, however, the Church doesn’t predict as those protestants do that the 2nd Coming is around the corner. If they were to actually see which Church is being persecuted, it is the True Church, the Catholic Church, as the evil ones know that if the Church falls, then all denominations will follow, at least that is my perspective on why the Catholic Church is trying to be destroyed.

God Bless

I think you’ll find that teachers have, in the past, been allowed to quietly resign and move on to another school settings. There need not be a single overarching organization in this way.

Cover ups always make things worse.

As someone who was brought up in a very anti-Catholic denomination and who is old enough to have watched this entire sex-abuse scandal unfold and has willfully chosen the Catholic faith, I have a different point of view about priests. In my protestant faith, it was not uncommon for my family to be close on a social and friendly level with our clergy. In my world, Catholic priests were more than a little intimidating and even scary sometimes. It wasn’t because I believed they were holier or better (or evil) . It was because of what people said, how the media painted the church and priests, etc.

Yet, here I am. In the middle of my journey to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church. 🙂

Why? Because I see how the media incites people into believing anything to further an agenda of someone or something. Usually money and politics. The rise in child abductions, shootings, war, sex abuse scandals - all of it. Do those things happen? Absolutely! But does it mean that it’s worse than ever? That it’s some sudden scandal of apocalyptic proportion that, until now, was able to be “covered up” until the benevolent and merciful media put some sunshine on it and “exposed” priests and the Catholic Church for what it **really is?

Nope. There are pedophiles in every profession and organization on the planet. There are predators and bad people everywhere. But not for a second do I think that anyone should ever judge an entire group, be it priests, teachers or dads on reporting that is disingenuous at best, criminal at worst. I personally have a great deal of respect for the men I’ve met during my Catholic journey. I think they are very intelligent, dedicated and honorable men who have chosen to listen to God calling them into serving Him and loving in a most glorious and magnificent way. Not to mention devoted. But they are still human and make human mistakes. The difference is, it matters enough to them to humbly admit and correct the problem (usually). There are just as many teachers who abuse children but they are quickly and quietly moved or put on leave with full pay. Most people still say they are “noble” for doing a job they chose freely and are paid well to do with little chance of being fired. And it is blasphemous to say anything bad about a teacher. But priests, apparently, are fair game. Because people don’t like to be reminded that God is who has dominion over this world, this universe. Bigotry against the Catholic Church is the only “acceptable” intolerance remaining. It’s not just accepted, but encourage. And it’s wrong.

*mind your step when exiting the soapbox *

We need to stop leaning on “back in the 60’s they thought psychology could cure them” and “the Church has learned its error” kinds of arguments because a ridiculous number of shenanigans continue to come out almost every week. And people are moved by those stories.

Being wrong on accident is still being wrong. Less heinous than being wrong intentionally, of course, but still wrong, and being wrong on such an epic scale merits VOLUNTARY efforts on a similarly heroic scale in order to repair the damage.

If the Church is so repentant, bishops should stop shuffling money around to keep it out of victims’ hands, they should stop fighting the release of files that would help people find justice and restitution, and the Vatican should do something slightly more meaningful than appoint yet another commission. (Really? They appointed a commission? Oooh? Watch out evildoers.)

De-frocking priests? Pfft. Let’s see a single bishop cut down. Just one. Instead we see the opposite, like bundling offending bishops off to hide out in cushy jobs at the Vatican for the remainder of their coddled careers. Let’s see the Church bring one case to light that the public and the victims did not already find out about. Just one. Let’s see an archdiocese sell one piece of property outside of a lawsuit and use the money to help victims.

Princes gonna prince.

If we want the church to heal, we need to stop trying to form scabs over the wound while there is still shrapnel. The public still feels this even if it can’t quite articulate it or chase down every bit of legalistic legerdemain that the archdioceses spew from their cauldron of lawyers.

Google “Hindu sex scandal”, “Muslim sex scandal”, “Buddhist sex scandal”, “Teacher sex scandal”, “Counselor sex scandal”, “Congressional sex scandal” or any other faith or profession. Lotsa sex scandals all over the world. What are the others doing about it?

Hypocrisy*
  • for the knee-jerks, this is not justification. It shows a world-wide pattern of evil that is recognized and condemned only when it afflicts the Catholic Church.
Your examples overlook the fact that none of those other examples have the world-wide presence or structure that the Catholic Church does, nor do those others promote the same code of sexual morality as does the Church – thus, the charge of hypocrisy sticks harder.

When I said," defend our priest", I was speaking of the priest who were not involved in sex crimes. Never would I try and cover up any person who commits a crime against any child. I am just sick of my friends implying that the majority of priest are gay or sex offenders. Seems to me that many enjoy bashing the catholic church unfortunately. I will pray that God forgive them and that the Holy Spirit guide them in the right direction.Thank you all for your answers. I learned a lot from them.

It is my understanding that the majority of sex scandals regarding priests have been cases of pedophilia or ephebophilia, not homosexuality. Some ephebophiles may be homosexuals as well, but I think they are not necessarily the same thing, even if an adult is attracted to a teenager of his own sex.

Mention Judas and say, should we reject Peter because of Judas?
