I operate on the principle of charity, that favors are to be multiplied, and as such if someone comes into my confessional and confesses I assume they are at least sufficiently contrite. If not, I know that I don’t possess the gift of reading souls, and so I simply leave it to God. The only time I would ever withhold absolution is if someone told me they were persisting in a sin they had no intention of stopping, e.g. contracepting. Other than that, I think it’s best to assume good motives based on the fact someone is in there and let God sort out the rest.
