In my parish, on “mother’s day”, the priest always asks mothers to “stand up”. I can no longer do that. My daughter, severely mentally ill and despite enormous effort on my part, succeeded suicide on March 2, 2011. I don’t know what I am any more. So I do not stand up.
I was thinking today that I would just not attend Mass tomorrow and then I realized: I am blocking the grace of God Whom has gotten me this far, and I am dishonoring His purpose in my life. I can’t do this. So I will be at Mass tomorrow and when the “mothers” stand up, I will not. I would have given my life for hers; in fact, I almost did. I don’t know what God intended when He gave me this cross to bear (although I was warned at age five), I only know that I am going to carry it. I changed my desktop photo: it is the photo of St. John Paul II seen if you go to You Tube and look for youtube.com/watch?v=pzfuQCW9fw8
When I see this, and I remember that he was asked why he didn’t resign from the Papacy due to his enormous suffering and his answer was, “No one comes down from this cross”, it gives me courage, it fortifies my strength, and it helps me to be more obedient to God’s purpose for me, even though I cannot fully comprehend it in this lifetime.
