As a parent, I also encourage you to talk to your parents.

My daughter told me she was struggling with depression and I’m so glad she did; I had an idea but didn’t know how much she was hurting. I was able to find her a Christian counselor who helped her very much. She didn’t require any medication, nobody else knew about it, and the counselor helped her through a rough time for as long as she needed help. That was over 10 years ago.

There is no shame in suffering depression. Some people do require medications to help but not everyone does.

Please consider letting your parents in. I am so glad my daughter let me help her.

Love & prayers to you, my friend.

Of course it’s real. People suffering from cancer is also a reality every single day. Neither is a reality for the OP. Reading his words and determining that he is at risk for suicide is as absurd as suggesting he needs a biopsy.
Perhaps, perhaps not. You don’t know him in real life, neither do I. “Depression sucks and my situation is so bad” can mean one thing to one person and quite a different thing to someone else. Once more, he’s not the only one reading the thread, and your perspective isn’t mine. If someone is complaining about an odd shaped growth on their skin and mentioning possible cancer symptoms, then yeah, the idea of going to a doc isn’t a half bad one.

You don’t have to trust me, but I trust my professional training and experiences; you can’t mind read, hence when someone is talking about depression, struggles with sin and guilt feelings, not being able to talk to parents, and being kept from fulfilling a religious sacrament that would bring some relief (and needed guidance), I’m going to fulfill my ethical professional duty and simply say; there’s help various places if you need or want it, here’s what you can do on your own if you want to get better, and if you feel suicidal the ER is an option. Teenage boys (and girls) have killed themselves for less, a fact I know far too well.

I can tell it causes you distress and perhaps anger to read some of the replies to the young man, and for that I’m sorry. He’s seems quite able to determine what he wants to do about his situation and what he doesn’t.

Fair enough. Thank you for being a voice of reason.

Divine Mercy Sunday is a lonnnnnggggg way away. You should really get to confession much sooner than that.
I’m planning too
Just saying i want to go then as well because of the remission of punishment
So in my head this mountain I see can maybe leave lol

I’m sorry that argument broke out and you were reported

I don’t think she understands that

I prefer being left alone
I’d rather have a fairly new friend know about this
Than a family member or older friend

I wish I felt OK talking my parents about this stuff
Because then I would’ve been to confession without a problem and maybe not have this depression

But me ,being a teen, doesn’t want to talk to them about it because it’s awkward and they won’t understand
I haven’t even had “the talk” lol because I dodged it and I assume that they think I know somewhat already

I just don’t like awkward talks lol

That’s for you help man
Sorry about that report from that lady
That’s a bit harsh from her

It’s no problem, don’t worry. There will always be people who just want to argue and contend instead of listening. I totally understand you not liking awkward conversations, but remember that God is in the miracle business. Just as He is fully capable of helping you achieve purity, He can also heal your relationship with your parents in surprising ways. Pray for them every day. Before you know it, you may very well find yourself communicating them openly in ways that you never thought were possible. God gave you your parents for a reason. Ask Him to help you discover more what those reasons are and that His will be done more fully in your life.

Thank you for responding
And being nice to him as well because I agree a lot with him
One lady reported him which I don’t like because he is actually nice

I really appreciate the concern for my life
But I can honestly tell you
I’ve been worse emotionally
And while I might be angry about my life and how it is at times

Suicide is just beyond me
My brain sees hell for it and thus wouldn’t risk it
And lucky for me I’m not near at the level
I don’t cut or anything either harming myself isn’t something I really do

I just usually get mad or sad and go cry somewhere I won’t be seen or heard

My friends don’t realize how important they are lol

Happiness is the goal to everything
They make me so happy
I met them a couple months ago and have more I haven’t met
It’s a huge group of young Catholics
I fit in very well and seem to very well liked being my wild funny self
They are all I think about lol

I’ve heard a lot of suicide and depression stories
Some have it less off and some worse off
But none of them sound like something I would do

So yeah I’m gonna be ok
Maybe not happy or normal all the time
But i will deal with it

I’ve changed a lot in 3 years but still maintain my core self

Thanks for your help

I am assuming that your addiction is being fed through electronic means…

You can tell your parents that you have come across some bad things on the Internet and ask them to put a filter on your devices.
If they ask what have you seen, just say it’s embarrassing to talk about it, but you don’t want to come across these things.

This falls under personal accountability.

Ugh! What?!? No! Worst advice ever.
Sorry, I have to disagree here. Being on medication has made my dance with the evil twins of depression and anxiety bearable. No, eating fruits didn’t help. No taking Valerian root and St. John’s Wort didn’t help. I needed genuine medical intervention.

Yes, it took a while to find the right combination of medications so that I wasn’t sleeping constantly, suicidal or hyper and that was hard to live with. But now that I have medications that make me able to function, I can even take pleasure in life, in my friends, in my family and in my hobbies. I am able to number the good things in my life and feel better.

ineedofmercy, it sounds to me that a medical work-up would not be a bad thing. Being a teenager who is battling addiction is a courageous. Every day that you stay clean is a victory. If you fall, go to confession and get right back on the wagon. I know addiction and I know that this is the best was to handle it.

ineedofmercy, I would also suggest getting to know Saint Dymphna, patroness of those of us who battle mental illness. I wear her medal every day as a tangible reminder that she is praying for me.

God bless you, ineedofmercy. If you ever need to chat, just PM me.

Thank you for sharing! As others have said, you have a good heart. I’m thankful for your friends, and your faith. God is with you and will comfort you and He does indeed have abiding love for you. I know being in an odd relationship with your parents is rough, esp. when you are trying to be mature about it all. That will change with time as well, so hang in there. Prayers,
K

I don’t think I want any therapy
I’m not really suicidal
The thought that I could go to hell makes that idea out the window
But that can suck when you’re in a fit and you are angry that their is no escape and you just have to wait

I feel like all the drama and embarrassment that would come by bringing this up will no doubt make this worse
My friends find out that I’m going to therapy for depression and I get a bunch of pity
I don’t want that

So don’t worry about suicide
Even at times where I don’t want to live suicide is just beyond me
The thought that my dying moment is taking my life from God and me not having the courage to do it
I don’t think I have said that you are suicidal, i was talking about my experience (like, if I can heal from something worse, you can fight whatever you are feeling, so don’t feel despair) 🙂

Would you tell your close friend that he shouldn’t go for therapy (if he needs it), if he tells you that he is scared that others will judge? Will you tell your son this? Hopefully not! Your friends don’t have to know, though. Just saying.

The way how you talk about things is kind of worrying. You need some sort of support, be it professional or from family/priest/friend. It does not hurt to go for a session and have them see if you have clinical depression. If you don’t have, then good, you don’t need professional help. If you do, you can then make an option-whether you want help from them or not.

If it is something you are not comfortable with, then don’t. Nobody is forcing you. But I will strongly urge you to go and vent to a priest at least (bc your despair is religion-related). Teenagers do go through a time where these feelings are normal, although not all cases are normal, and some people do develop depression and suffer silently because people think it’s just a phase. I’m sure you are a bright person. We cannot diagnose you, so telling someone in real life who is objective can be helpful in overcoming your despair.

I would just mention, myself personally, I use a software called ‘K9 Web Portection’

The good news is, I don’t have to tell anyone about it, I set it up myself, and I basically made sure it was set right and then threw away the key (password) which I can actually still retrieve if ever necessary by waiting a week for an email change.

www1.k9webprotection.com/get-k9-web-protection-free

Basically how you do it.

Create a fake email account with a password like ‘JAFVKA235SG’ copy that password and save it to a notepad, than use that password for both the email address (That you use to request the license from the link I provided and download K9 Web Protection) and K9 setup.

Than when you are setting it up, select ‘custom’ and tick ‘pornography’ and ‘proxy avoidance’ than hit ‘save’, than tick ‘force safe search’ etc and un tick anything silly like ‘bark on a block’ etc, make sure it’s set right, check each setting carefully, and when your happy with everything (make sure it’s set right), delete the notepad document with the password in it from your computer.

If you ever need to access it again, you can apply for a change of email with K9 Web Protection, which will take a week before your email gets changed and once the email is changed, you can select ‘forgot password’ to K9 web protection which sends a new one to the new email address.

Not sure whether your using windows 10, 8 or 7, but in window 8.1 and below, you can delete the folder ‘K9 Web Protection’ from the program files list when hitting start, and that way It doesn’t appear on the computer at all unless you go into control panel and change/uninstall and program (which you can’t uninstall K9 without a password anyway, which takes you back to the week to change emails and new password request)

If you wish to go down this track (Which I would strongly recommend, it’s not perfect, but it will help a lot) I would also make sure it’s your own computer and not someone else’s, and if it’s someone else’s, you should probably ask them first.

I think K9 Web Protection also works for tablets and things, you would have to check though.

I hope this has helped

God Bless You

Thank you for reading
Josh
