EWTN"s break-off group of 5 nuns that moved to the desert in Arizona, have a new vocation page. If anyone is interseted in a group that is contemplative and new, here is the link:
desertnuns.com/vocations.htm

I don’t envy them the summer heat, but it is a beautiful area and nice for retreats.

I wilt in humidity and although some nuns complain about heavy habits in the summer, I don’t think I could do it without fainiting.:o
I love this group of nuns though, I get their newsletters and read their blog, help when I can.

Wow…their community looks absolutely lovely. How faith filled must they be to leave their home in Alabama to go to a whole new place and start over? These women seem so awesome.

Yes they are an awesome bunch! I loved reading their bios and their “scrapbook” page is full of photos and days in their life. I like that they kept photos of a postulant that left, she had a hard choice between getting married and having a lot of kids and being a nun. You can see her transformation before she took some time to discern. There is a lot of love for God and each other.
They have a blog that shows interest from some young ladies and I hope they grow and grow in the future.

I also like how they didn’t erase a certain friar from their websites that left EWTN. The friars helped them move, helped them get rid of mice (that blog was funny) and helped them celebrate many holidays.
There are many twists and turns in our lives, I’m glad there are holy, prayful nuns that help pray for us as I do for them.

I would LOVE to visit them. They seem like the coolest group of sisters…unfortunately I kinda live on the other coast…Smiles That and the PCPA is a really awesome group to begin with.

I’ve been following their story for several years myself!

Since I’m lucky enough to live in Phoenix, I’ve been able to get hold of a copy of their recitation of the Rosary on CD at a local catholic goods store(Treasures of Faith, on Tbird Rd. near PV Mall). Listening to it is how I learned to balance the recitation/meditation thing - I had a hard time figuring out how to make it work just from books and websites.

I like the pacing of the prayers, how each one is said at the same pace as the one before, and not too fast so I can think about what I’m saying as I’m saying it. It’s really a lovely job that they did.

As for the foundation itself, its success is one of my most regular prayer intentions - what community couldn’t benefit from their prayers and service?

I bought a lovely simple “st joseph” rosary from them, and they had it blessed for me! I might just order that rosary CD for my walks.
They announced in the EWTN nuns bulletin that they are sending 5 nuns from Alabama to Texas next! The convent in Ala. is full, which is a wonderful thing. They have nuns in Ohio and a European country, (mind just can’t remember it right now)
Can you visit their convent or it it closed to the public? (unless you’re descerning) I know they have friends stop by but strangers, I wasn’t sure. Of course, you are only a stranger once!

The St. Joseph rosary is the EXACT SAME rosary that I bought from them a couple of years ago! I had finally gotten to thinking seriously about converting, and wanted to try out some devotions to see if they suited me. Today I own four rosaries, but this one is still my absolute favorite. I use it every day, and it hangs from a hook above my bed next to my crucifix.

Here’s a picture of mine:

I love how stark and unadorned it looks and the organic feel of the wood between my fingers.

As for visits, on their website it says that since they’re living in a temporary house while their monastery is being built, they’re not really open to guests. I don’t think it would do any harm to write them and ask if you could visit and talk to them, though. It seems like they enjoy talking to all sorts of people.

I didn’t know that there was a new foundation in Texas - what good news!

Yes, I LOVE that rosary. It’s so simple and sturdy. I had bought about 3 since my “reversion” a few years ago and they all fell apart, more the classic crystal-type beads. I love St Joseph so I ordered that one and it has been on my bed, in my pocket, purse, hands many, many times and feels like it will last decades. I really like it.
The summer 2008 newsletter isn’t online but this is the site…you can read past ones for now.
olamshrine.com/signupnewsletter.htm

What it said was," with great joy and HOPE, that we announce our newest foundation in San Antonio Texas. Sr. Grace Marie, Sr. Rose Marie, Sr. Elizbeth Marie, Sr. Mary Peter and Sr. Marie St. Clare will be the new missionaries."

I love these sister and support them whenever I can, I find them
very inspiring! I pray they wil have a very successful building
campaign and have many new vocations there!

I ordered this from the EWTN site yesterday. I hope I like it too. I find the one on EWTN a bit slow and flat, but maybe it’s because I’ve heard it so often. Also, Raymond Arroyo said in his book on M. Angelica, that the rosary show was taped over and over because of Mother Angelica’s speech problems, and nuns were very tired. They finally just looped the best clips together.
Thanks for recommending it. I lookf forward to receiving it soon.

I don’t know, I hope so, but they are dependent on who pays and what was in the home they were given.
I would not be able to go outside in humid (not so much hot) weather with my head incased in fabric and a heavy veil and head piece on…I give them a lot of credit. The Alabama friars would just wear their robes with tee shirts under them in the summer and I think they had lighter ones for then and heavier for winter, although their “habit” was much more workable.
I was dressed too warmly once in the summer and broke out in a rash. I remember a sister who wrote a book saying that happened to her too, but later they modified the habit a bit. I love nuns in habits (and friars too) but I think EWTN’s nuns are a little severe with the neck, forehead, etc. covered. But most of them wanted it, some didn’t, and you adjust.

I got my CD today, can’t wait to play it!

Old news but Mother Angelica’s PCPA nuns are opening a monastery in San Antonio, TX - about 1.5 hr drive from me. 👍

That is great…in post #8, I listed their names (I can’t place faces, but I’m sure they’ll have picture soon) Also on their OLAM site on EWTN, (under pilgrimages) they have photos, one group photo if you put the cursor on it, it has their names.

I think it’s wonderful that they are growing and hope that vocations to the priesthood will also.

I was looking at the schedule for EWTN and apparently the 5 who are being sent to Texas are appearing on ‘Life on the Rock’ this evening to talk about the new foundation. The program is on at 8 EST.

Thanks, I’m watching it now…put off my grocery shopping for a bit to watch. Thanks!

I watched the episode myself, unfortunately there weren’t really any details about when and where they will arrive in San Antonio.

I was excited to find out that one among the five coming to San Antonio is the Sister who does the narration for the Rosaries with Mother Angelica on EWTN. 😃

My 9 y/o daughter was to the moon when I told her.

My 15 year old was happy too…she said, “that’s the nun that says the prayers!” And she thought the young nun was so beautiful and looked like her best friend, just a bit older.
I thought they didn’t touch on a lot of things, but that was the “interviewer” not the nuns. When the Desert nuns were on, they still didn’t cover a lot but they had a lot more questions. They had emails, call-ins, etc. and young women asked them questions about things they were curious about. These nuns touched on how “human” they are, but the others touched on the heat, their habits, their vocation stories, etc.
Hope they have them on again…and I’ll look for the web site…I’m sure it will the linked from one of their sites.
