Detraction in Cases of Crimes By Priests

There have been so many news stories about the church hierarchy “covering up” crimes by priests. So much that it seems to have been official policy.

Is this because detraction is a sin? Is it a virtue to not ruin someone’s reputation, and instead to confront the person privately and pray for them? Is that why criminal priests just got moved around?

Also, the bible says something about not bringing our disputes with each other to a secular court. I can’t find the bible verse now. Instead, it says, bring it to the church. Is that another reason why?

No, it was not and is not official policy. First, news stories are often short on facts and long on suppositions and innuendos.

It is much more complex that this.

**Bishops are shepherds of ALL their flock, including errant priests.

They were trying to do two things: salvage a priest and his ministry, and protect the victim of his actions.

We have since learned, to our sorrow, that apparently pedophiles do NOT change their course of behavior.**
