We are rapidly approaching the Feast of St. Joseph, the patron of a happy death. I would like to tell y’all about him.
Sixteen years ago, I was appointed as a division manager in a small state agency. One of the people I supervised was an Italian Catholic batchelor who had worked for the agency for 25+ years. He and I were the only Catholics in the division. He was Italian and I am Irish. He had a profound devotion to St. Joseph not only in his role as the patron saint of Italians but moreso in his role as patron saint of a happy death. Over the years after my appointment, my colleague and I …well, he had this profound veneration of St. Joseph and even went so far as to have a painting done of St. Joseph’s death as depicted in our cathedral’s stained glass windows.
Six months ago he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Six weeks ago I visited him at his assisted care home. He was hale and hearty. He was a spinster and his neice called this morning. Her uncle began to complain about pain on Tuesday. He died this morning in his sleep with his rosary in his hands. Thank you St. Joseph for the grace of the ease of this man’s suffering.
I felt I had to testify to the power of prayer to St. Joseph for a happy death.
