At Mass today I saw what appeared to be a devotional practice I am unfamiliar with. I have seen/done various things (kissing the crucifix, striking one’s breast etc.). The lady in question, before Mass began went into the middle aisle and turned facing each of the four corners of the church and went down on one knee facing each one. Never have encountered this before. What does it signify?

Are there Saints statues in the corners?

The only directional bowing/genuflecting I am aware of (admittedly limited in knowledge here) is the one involving adult Baptism - Face west, profound bow, turn and face east, another profound bow, then on with the Baptism!

Probably not any eastern rite either, they usually don’t genuflect (the do profound bows though…)

This may be the woman’s own devotional practice. There are some people in our parish that do “different” things at Mass that are their own practices.
