I am a moderator on another forum and someone quoted the following as having been said by St Augustine.
Most of the members of the forum are non Catholic and they queried who had said it.
I have tried looking in the Nicene Fathers and Catholic encyclopedia.to no avail.
Can anyone help by pointing me to where it was said by Augustine- if it was at all.
here is the quote

’ If Stephen had not prayed, the Church today would have no Paul.
hope someone can help

I found this: bartleby.com/210/1/251.html
The last sentence of the second paragraph has the quote you describe, but I believe this text attributes the quote to St. Austin.
[Saul] was one of those who combined to murder St. Stephen, and by keeping the garments of all who stoned that holy martyr, he is said by St. Austin to have stoned him by the hands of all the rest; 8 to whose prayers for his enemies he ascribes the conversion of St. Paul: 9 “If Stephen,” said he, “had not prayed, the church would never have had St. Paul.”

The prayer of Saint Stephen dying obtained the grace of conversion for Saint Paul; and the prayers of Saint Monica obtained the conversion of Saint Augustine.

I couldn’t find anywhere that St Augustine said this in his writings but many sourses credit him with saying words to this effect.

Thank you all for your replies. I will post them on the other forum.

This particularly resonated with me.
The prayer of Saint Stephen dying obtained the grace of conversion for Saint Paul; and the prayers of Saint Monica obtained the conversion of Saint Augustine.
My husband was not very enthusiastic regarding his faith when we married but I continually prayed for him and after over 38 years, in 2008, he came back to faith.
Thanks be to God!

Prayer works but sometimes we have to persevere.

PS
please pray for me and the few other Catholics on the other forum as we combat the many erroneous ideas that non Catholics believe of us…
