Did Catholics suddenly decide that limbo wasn't real?

Okay–I was born and raised Catholic but really hadnt been “into it” until about a year ago…so forgive my ignorence. Did Catholics suddenly decide that limbo wasn’t real? I feel like Im always defending Catholicism…and I didnt know what to say when someone said it!
