Did Christ abolish the Old Covenant or fulfill it?

I heard today that Christ abolished the Old Testament. I would think this is not true because I remember scripture saying that Christ came to fulfill the Old Covenant. Please explain.

Hi.

You are correct.

Christ explicitly said He was here to fulfill the Covenant and not to abolish it in Matthew 5:17.
 
However by fulfilling it the old covenant is now over, it is replaced by the New covenant which Christ has now made with His people.

Its like if I promise to send you something as long as you pay me $20.

You pay me the $20 so I send you the goods.

That deal is now complete. You can send me another $20 but it will not get you any goods because that deal no longer exists, it was fulfilled.

So we need to make a new deal (new covenant).
 
Overall, Christ fulfilled the Old Covenant. On a smaller scale, this involved abolishing certain practices such as abstaining from pork, etc.

He fulfilled the Old Covenant and told us of the New Covenant that God now has with His people. At Mass when the priest consecrates the Wine to the Blood of Christ we are reminded of this New Covenant:

"Then, He took the Cup, gave it to His desciples and said: “Take this all of you and drink from it. This is the Cup of My Blood. The Blood of the New and Everlasting Covenant which will be shed for all so that sins might be forgiven. Whenever you do this, do this in memory of me.”

The New Covenant that God has made with His people is that He is now a God of Love and no longer a God of punishment as in the Old Testament. And that we call Him Father and He calls us His children…and that we are brothers and sisters of His Son, Jesus. :love:

That’s not completely accurate, God has not changed He is unchanging. We all will still be judged and the wicked will still be punished, God is still a Just God.

He fulfilled it.

And He said that too. (it is in the Gospels)
 
Dear Advocatus Fidei,

I believe that God is a Just God. I believe that the wicked are actually and will ultimately punish themselves for not having chosen to walk with God. When they die and at judgement day, they will then come to realize in all fullness what they have done and they will realize that they will now have to live eternally with this knowledge and without God…unless God chooses otherwise.

Question: What do you believe the New Covenant is?

The New Covenant is found in all the teachings of the Catholic Chruch, one of those things been that God is Immutable and another that the God of the Old Testament is the same God as that of the New Testament.
 
It’s simple:

Think of the Old Covenant as the caterpillar and the New Covenant as the butterfly!

The caterpillar hasn’t been abolished in the butterfly, its just reached its full potential!

This is correct. Marcionism has proved to be a false teaching.

Note: Marcionism is the belief that the Old Testament God is not the same God as the New Testament God and is inferior to the New Testament God.
