Did God pour out his anger and wrath on Jesus at the cross?

I was listening to a non catholic program which stated God turned His back on Jesus and poured out his wrath and anger upon him and that Jesus experienced hell.

Is this true?

Where do some people come up with such man-made beliefs?

Nothing could be farther from the truth RSH, what is the source of such an assumption. Was the speaker God Himself, to talk on His behalf like that??

Jesus is God. For God to have poured out anger and wrath upon Jesus, he would have poured out anger and wrath upon himself. It is not possible.

Nor is it possible that God poured out wrath and anger only on the human part of Jesus. Jesus’ divinity and humanity are inseperable.

From the Catechism, Paragraph 603:

*603 Jesus did not experience reprobation as if he himself had sinned. But in the redeeming love that always united him to the Father, he assumed us in the state of our waywardness of sin, to the point that he could say in our name from the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Having thus established him in solidarity with us sinners, God “did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all”, so that we might be “reconciled to God by the death of his Son”. *

Jesus willingly sacrificed himself to God the Father. It was the most pleasing offering to God the Father.

No, in fact the exact opposite is true: God poured out his love for us on the Cross that he died for our sins so that we may experience the joy of being with God in heaven. :angel1:

Sounds kinda Calvinist also. I recommend stop listening to this if you are Catholic.🙂
 
This sounds either like Calvinism, or like a “modern theologian” trying to say something profound. 😃

Either way, it’s not accurate. While the Church teaches that Christ “descended to the dead” (the “Limbo of the Patriarchs”, not “hell”), to say that He suffered the fires of Hell is borderline blasphemy.

As Jesus himself said, “God so loved the world that He gave his only-begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him, should not perish have everlasting life.”

How much the Father loves us, that He was willing to give His Son over to death on account of our sins. As the prophet Isaiah 53:10 says, Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief;

How much the Son loved the Father, that he was willing to be obedient to his Father, even unto death. As he said in the garden of Gethsemane, "If it is possible let this cup pass from me, nevertheless, not my will, but thy will be done."

However, this does not mean that Jesus was crying to God: “Why did you leave me, Father?” like some interpret. It is actually the first line of Psalm 21 (Psalm 22 in some editions of the Bible), which ends with the innocent victim praising God
 
He experienced suffering in the same way we experience suffering as temporal punishment for sin (Word of God). God experienced suffering as we do under just punishment. Except God’s suffering was out of love and not due to just punishment
.

This is the way of the cross as I understand it.

This was in part our homily today.
