Hi everyone. Earlier this morning I had some doubts and even doubted if I was a Christian or not. I actually considered myself to be a Pentecostal and then not a Christian at all but a seeker for a short while. I go through these periods of doubt from time to time where I will literally change my faith for a short period of time. Anyway, did I commit a mortal sin? I never actually denied the teachings of the Catholic Church, I merely doubted them. I had some pretty serious doubts. So, did I commit a mortal sin or not? I am thinking I didn’t because I don’t have full knowledge of whether or not I committed a mortal sin.

Sounds like you can sleep well…you’re human. The opposite of faith is not doubt, but rather certitude. For you need no faith if you are certain about anything. I know the sun will rise in the East and set in the West. I need no faith for that. Whether I will awake in the morning to see the sun rise…that requires faith for I might die in my sleep. I’m reasonably sure I won’t, but I can’t be certain.

Pray for the grace to believe in the only church Christ gave to humanity.

Thank you David. I guess I don’t need to confess this before Mass then?

IMHO, if there is sin, it’s venial. Go to mass. Place your doubts upon the alter and let Christ take care of them for you.

I’ll pray for you when I go to mass, today as well.

Ok thank you David. 🙂

In most cases, if you honestly don’t know and have to ask, it wasn’t mortal.

Just by seeing your sincere concern regarding mortal sin should indicate that you are not denying your Catholic faith. Everyone goes through peaks and valleys while we are on our spiritual journey. Whenever I seem to lack an understanding about something that the Church teaches, I seek resources that put me back on track. To this day I have never had a question that did not have a reasonable answer; even those that I may struggle with. Keep up the good fight and offer up the Eucharist for your faith and see what beauty lies ahead…God Bless…teachccd 🙂

Holly, as a general guideline, if you have to ask the question, then the answer is “no.” Mortal sin requires the conscious intent to commit great evil. Doubt is not evil, it’s just doubt. We all have it.

Dear Holly…
If you are a sinner in that aspect then I am an even greater sinner. And I dont think its a sin to question and investigate…
I’d rather see it as a time of growth. Dont be afraid to ask yourself some questions. God has brought you through this for a reason.
What fasinates you about the Pentecostal church? Perhaps the Lord is showing you some good things in the assemblies of these brothers in order that you take those good things with you as you walk on with Christ in your Catholic Church. Maybe your RCC needs your help and inspiration. (probably so!) Maybe you have a call to work for unity in a special way… and this initial phase can be quite confusing…
I have been there myself and it was very, very tough.
Maybe what you need is actually to go and find a new Catholic Parish… that is the conclusion I have reached for my part.
One great medicin for me was meeting Catholics that share my visions and who are on fire as well as steeping myself in good Catholic books and movies… 🙂
