Ive noticed I’ve using this forum a lot to discern whether I’ve commited a mortal sin or not. Thank you all for your help with my spiritual life, though, it means a lot! 😃 Anyway, this morning, when I was still in bed, I started thinking of this song in my head. Then I realized I should probably be praying instead, since it is the Sabbath. But instead of praying right away, I continued to think of the song for a little bit. Is this a mortal sin, since I knew I was putting something else before GOD? Thank you, and GOD Bless you!

No. Why would you think this was a mortal sin? If this is mortal, what’s venial? Not thinking about God while you sneeze? I’m trying to be playful, here, for the record. But seriously, this is not a mortal sin. Do you regularly speak with your priest or a spiritual advisor about this sort of thing?

I’d have to guess either you’re just getting into the Catholic thing and you’re a little unsure of what sin is, or you have dealt with scrupulosity for a while. Either way, you should seek counsel with your pastor or spiritual advisor if you do not already do so.

May God bless you this holy day.

I cannot possibly see how that is a sin. There is plenty of time after that (assuming you haven’t slept ALL of Sunday) to keep the Sabbath.

You need to meet with a priest outside of Confession and find a regular spiritual director. Discerning your conscience on here is **not **a good idea.

This isn’t a sin, but your devotion is very great. If you keep being hard on yourself like this, you might become a great saint.

Your probably right. I guess I figured asking on here is easier than finding someone to help me in person. Thank you, and GOD Bless you!

Yes, do please set up an appointment with a priest you trust so you can discuss your scrupulosity with him.

Not Mortal for two reasons.
  1. Not grave matter. You simply finished your line of thinking before beginning your prayers. If you had tried to force it, it is entirely possible that you would have been unable to pray - the song would have continued to intrude. You actually did the correct thing.
  2. No full knowledge as evidenced by you feeling the need to ask here.

The difference between mortal and venial sin can be quite complicated, and there are often subtle distinctions between the two. People can have confusion about such distinctions in the same way a person might have trouble discerning where orange ends and yellow begins on a color spectrum. People can especially struggle with distinctions *when they have a sincere desire to please God. *Accusations of ignorance or scrupulosity or making light of their desire to live well is uncalled for, comments of playfulness notwithstanding.

For the OP, I would not judge this behavior, in myself, as being a mortal sin, all other things being equal.

There are different degrees of putting things before God, or of giving things or people the place of prominence that is rightfully the Lord’s What you describe seems like a very small degree of this, objectively speaking.

Unfortunately, all of us put off doing the devotional things we know we should, and this could turn into a habit that turns into sloth.

Should we one day, because of this habit, refuse in a mortally sinful way to pray, then we might very well be culpable, since we have permitted ourselves to form the habit in the first place.

So it’s certainly best to avoid such things, and to say an act of contrition when we do poorly, and to focus on building virtues instead of vices.

Nope. A mortal sin is deliberate, free, full knowledge breaking of the commandments.
The commandment ‘honour the sabbath day’ means: go to mass (Saturday vigil mass or Sunday mass), and not do unnecessary work. It’s okay to do work like get stuff ready for school the next day, get dinner and tidy up,

So you haven’t even sinned at all!

The commandments would be:A mortal sin is deliberate, free, full knowledge breaking of the commandments.
The commandment ‘honour the sabbath day’ means: go to mass (Saturday vigil mass or Sunday mass), and not do unnecessary work.it would be a sin though to unnecessarily work all day at a job eg shop keepers, however some people have to work on Sundays it might be in their contract and I do not know would God count that as a sin.)
(Same applies for Holy Days, and if it’s Ash Wednesday or Good Friday we are obliged to fast off one meal or two less than half the size of a full meal.)
Cursing/ swearing/ using God’s name or saints names as swear words or irreverently
(Or showing irreverence to something holy)
The occult, reading your star sign future in the paper or teletext, going to a fortune teller, hypnotist, reiki, biofeedback, yoga, Pilates (based on yoga), prayer centering (based on transcental mediation), or anything new age as all these things are occult, false worship or black magic,'or worshipping false gods, or letting something in your life become a sinful obsession
Honour your father and mother means, we are obliged to respect our parents (not sure exactly but some people say that means obeying their orders up to the age of 18yrs of age, but not if it’s sinful.)
Anything deliberately impure -impure music, masturbation, intercourse outside of marriage, homosexuality, adultery, pornography, even looking at semi clad people on magazines or explicit stuff on tv or in lyrics musc
(This is everywhere in the world, so you might be bombarded by it on a daily basis unintentionally. It’s a sin to deliberately seek out the above though).
Jealousy/ envy
Stealing
Destroying someone’s reputation, gossiping
Respect for yourself -no to drugs, not to deliberately to something that could destroy your health terribly (drugs as an example, alcoholism)
Serious bodily harm of someone
Or seriously hurting someone
Murder
Suicide
Lying (‘let your yes mean yes and your no mean no.’)
Breaking promises or vows deliberately
Hating someone (‘God is love,’ ‘Two commandments I give you, love one another as I have loved you. Love your neighbour as yourself.’)
Name calling (‘anyone who calls his brother a fool is liable for the judgment of hell’)
Not forgiving (‘if you do not forgive your brother his sins then your Father in Heaven will not forgive you your sins.’)

Another mortal sin would be if a person’s actions caused another person to mortally sin.
Eg: to encourage someone to have an abortion would be a mortal sin.

Saying cruel things to parents can be breaking of the commandment to honour your father and mother. (It’s okay to defend yourself if maybe they are incorrect but just not be cruel or sinful in language or words.)

A mortal sin has to be confessed in confession.
A venial sin is a lesser sin that can be erased by good works and prayer.
There are ways a venial sin can become a mortal sin , but I think it would have to be deliberate, free will, full knowledge, grave matter -it would have to seriously have bad consequences. Can’t think of any examples.
The line of William Blake might be one, ‘A truth that’s told with bad intent, beats all the lies you can invent.’

I don’t mean to distract from the subject, but Sunday is not the Sabbath. The Sabbath is Saturday. Christians started meeting on Sunday to celebrate the Resurrection, calling it the “Lords Day”.
