Did I Commit Detraction?

A woman I work with is an open homosexual, having published at least one book with her female partner about their experiences as “gay” parents of their several children.

Did I detract this woman by explaining the above-mentioned information and mentioning her name to a third party? (i.e., to my parents)

I have something of a scrupulous conscience about such matters, but my gut is pushing me towards saying no, based on the fact that this woman is obviously not ashamed of her state in life and my mentioning of this information to a third party is extremely unlikely to affect her reputation, such as it is.

Your comments are appreciated.

You answered your own question. Detraction requires the sharing of information that will “detract” from someone’s reputation in the eyes of others. Since this person considers her situation to be a good thing, and is public about it, having written a book, you have not “detracted” from her reputation in any way.

That said, you may question your motivation in sharing this information.
