Did I do the right thing by looking away?

Yes, another Nudity in Movies thread. 🙂

I’ve searched through some threads, but didn’t necessarily see what I was looking for:

I watched the movie “Blade Runner” (****** movie, btw) and there was a scene where a stage performer is getting undressed/dressed while talking to Harrison Ford’s character. Of course, I knew where the scene was going i.e. she was getting undressed so I looked away from the screen but still listened to keep up with the plot. I glanced up to see if the scene was over and it was not, so I looked back at my laptop and finally the scene was over (subsequently, Harrison Ford’s character chases her, yadda yadda, end of ****** movie).

So, even though I did catch a glimpse of her nakedness, I really was trying not to look because I know it is wrong, but didn’t want to miss the conversation the two characters were having. Do you believe there was any sin involved on my part? I would think it’s the same as fast forwarding through a questionable scene, but like to hear other people’s thoughts on whether or not my actions were reasonable or if I should have handled it differently.

Thanks!

I think you acted perfectly reasonably. You avoided looking at the woman without missing what was happening in the movie. I do the same thing when questionable things are showed in movies/TV.

I would suggest that if the sex and nudity in a movie are graphic and gratuitous (intended to provoke lust) then I would say watching would be sinful. I don’t believe observing simple nudity is a sin at all, as many works of art (religious ones as well) feature nude figures.

This definately wasn’t intended to be graphic or to incite lust, but since my weakness is just that, I always tend to try and be as safe as possible.

I guess being safe rather than sorry is a viable approach. You know you limits best and must act in accordance with them. Just don’t go overboard with it as you need to be practicable and avoid the complications of clinical scrupulosity.

I believe we have the Holy Spirit for a reason.

Everyone has different weaknesses.

If you feel that turning away during nude scenes helps you keep your mind pure, then do it.

I think you did the correct thing, and also agree with the other posts. People have different vices they struggle with.
I am very sensitive to visual images. One day I had left the Adoration Chapel & just couldn’t even look at the magazines as I was checking out at the grocery store.
The neopagan culture we walk in can be quite painful. Probably I should have added prayer to my checkout wait 🤷

Yep its very wrong. You did your best to avoid it though… or you seem to say you did.
We all have to almost daily (hourly if we live in a city) avert our eyes from some poor wretch on a poster or in a magazine who doesn’t know his or her own worth…
I don’t have a TV and am very blessed without it. I also pick movies and books with the utmost care. Remember:
Vulgarity leaves a bad taste in the mouth ever after the plot is forgotten. I can still remember sexual scenes in movies I have seen the last 15 years, and I can’t remember anything else in those movies.
Dont support film makers who make mix perversion into their work. These scenes are often totally superfluous and only made to satisfy a specific audience.

Keep chaste in your eyes. We all do it to protect our hearts and give a purer gift to God and neighbour.

Yeah I normally review movies before I watch them so I can at least make a decision. Totally wouldn’t have expected this scene (for much not needed).

I have a similar story. Today, when I was at the grocery store, I couldn’t look at the magazines. So, while I was waiting, I went real close to a magazine that was talking about Bin Laden and stared only at that magazine.
