I give money to a ‘homeless’ person collecting outside a store near me. My car has been stolen, so recently I walk there with no bag, just my credit card in my pocket and little change, i.e coins. I greeted him on the way into the shop, had change in one pocket for buses for the next day and a 2 euro coin in the other, but I thought this was too much to give. I’m also unemployed for 2 yrs, but not broke, and the 2 euro coin could be used for another bus, church collection, whatever. Anyhow, I came out and had to pass him, so said ‘sorry i have no change’, he answered ‘no matter, next time’ and I said ‘sure’. Anyhow have i lied, it’s just that i don’t carry much money now (until I get transport again) and in effect I suppose I had no ‘spare’ change?
I will make it a point to give him some change next time, as I promised I would.
This point may be uncalled for (but did sway my decision too) - however he does own a mobile phone and I’ve seen, I believe, his young son come to meet him on occasion and walk away together. He is not Irish but from overseas (not that it’s important).
