Hey guys so I’m on Day 2 of the Rosary Novena and as I was praying the “Hail Mary’s” for the fourth mystery, my hand slipped away and I didn’t know which bead I prayed on. Instead of guessing where I might’ve been I decided to restarted the decade. Is this an okay thing to do? Should I start all over or is it fine? Thanks so much!

Absolutely fine. Don’t be scrupulous. God is mercy!

Please. You are being superstitious and scrupulous. Just keep praying and I hope you seriously put out of mind that anything like this could be “messing up.”

It makes me cringe to see some of the uncharitable, judgmental, rude and presumptuous comments here. There is nothing wrong with seeking to excercise your devotion with a spirit of perfection. Respect for form is not superstitious. Worse is presumption and complacency that allows us to justify mediocrity in prayer.

It is understandable that we should aspire to respond to God’s infinite mercy, generosity, and love, with the determination and deliberation that you seek to excercise in your devotion. Don’t get me wrong, there may indeed be an element of scrupulosity at play, but your inquiry does not suggest that as a given.

To answer your question, if it were me… I would have been content to redo that particular decade. If I were really determined to recite a perfect Rosary, I would have just prayed another one on that day. It sure wouldn’t hurt 🙂

I don’t view the responses like that at all. If one wants to recite a “perfect Rosary”, that’s great. But, the Theotokos, Our Lord, and the Holy Spirit aren’t going to somehow “penalize” someone for human imperfection. If that were the case, all of our prayers and devotions would be “messed up”.

We should not encourage possible scrupulosity.

Thanks I just have an issue with overthinking and OCD that’s all. But thanks. I will keep this in mind!

Thank you so much! Out of curiosity, why the quotation marks?

I agree, Denise. The responses were not rude, uncharitable and the rest. They were pointing out what should be understood, that we can never say prayers ‘perfectly’ and God doesn’t mind. He knows our nature, the way our brains are wired. after all.

In fact, I think it’s just as well we can never say prayers perfectly, Imagine the temptation to pride!

I’m jumping in midstream on a group that’s already started their 54-day rosary novena (more to that story, but not relevant now), and this morning I found myself wondering during a decade if I was on Hail Mary # 9 or # 10. In my head, I’m telling myself it really doesn’t matter, because I didn’t intend to lose count, but being the type that I am, I said (in my head), “Dear Lord, just in case I owe you one…” and then said another Hail Mary.
