The other night, my girlfriend and I were kissing and all of a sudden I realized i was undressing her shirt. I stopped myself and left her house. Did i commit a mortal sin? Please help.

And if it is, would I still be culpable if at the time I did not know that it was?

Probable not a mortal sin. But now you realize that sex is a slippery slope. One thing leads to another. Stay off the slops. St John Paul II said that it is the duty of every man to uphold the dignity of every women . You do not want to be responsible for one of God daughters to end up in hell.

Part of the criteria of mortal sin is full consent of the will. Sounds like things got heated and you went with the flow and when you realised what was happening you stopped yourself. I commend you for that, well done! It does not sound like full consent of the will. Only you can decide whether it was full consent of the will.

However there is a definite degree of venial sin. If you strive for perfection, go to confession and make your soul as white as snow.

P.S. be on your guard when kissing. It could lead to lust and ultimately mortal sin.

That’s what I took as, as a venial sin and do plan to confess it at my monthly confession trip. I was just worried because I took communion on Sunday and the thought started to linger in my head but thanks for the advice. Any tips for scrupulosity?

Do everything with love and you won’t need to worry 😉

Get yourself a spiritual director and talk to your Priest. If you’re really struggling, stay off CAF and the internet and talk to someone offline about your scruples.

Seriously, CAF is the worst place to come if your scruples really start flaring up. Make sure you have adequate offline support.

Did you do something you would do in front of her dad, your grandma and the Virgin Mary? If you crossed that line, yes you crossed THE line.

Okay, if you did not know that removing clothing from someone who is not your spouse was sinful, you should not be dating in the first place.

Well not to be witty or a smart mouth, I wouldnt have sex with my wife in front of anyone. But thanks for the feed back will definitely be going to confession regardless

You would not be ashamed for other people to be aware that you had marital relations with your wife. That is the difference.

I think he meant that he was removing her clothes without realizing he was doing it rather that he didn’t know he shouldn’t.

Thus my statement that if you don’t know undressing your girlfriend is a sin, you are not mature enough to be dating.

Well my question was whether me stopping myself from doing anything was still sinful, because I did start to undress her ( unbutton her shirt), Whether I committed any mortal sins even though i didnt touch her or her breasts or privates. I stopped myself from doing anything. Idk if I’m making it clear

OP, I think you acted with great self-control and demonstrated a desire to follow God’s commands. None of us is perfect. Our task is to strive to get ever closer to the kind of virtuous life we are called to live. It is a sign of ongoing spiritual maturity to reject sin even when our senses are telling us otherwise.

Take the situation to confession and pray and thank God for giving you the strength to resist and ask him to help you continue to grow in virtue.
