Did I promote a concept against Church teaching?

Last night I was talking to my Dad about an article that I read on the separation of church and state. I’d done a little research on this–enough that I knew the Church probably didn’t endorse the common understanding of this separation (upon further research, I found out that it definitely doesn’t). When I was talking to my Dad, however, I said something along the lines of, “I understand the article’s point on the separation of church and state; and when the two get too mixed up, it does harm to religion.” Before saying this, I knew I could be saying something contrary to Church teaching, and although I took some care not to say anything that I knew was blatantly contradictory, my conscience was still not comfortable.
I don’t think there was really much danger of scandal, as my Dad is very well-catechized and strong in his faith, but I knew there was danger that I was agreeing with something against Church teaching. I am concerned that this was grave matter, and would appreciate any thoughts.

I don’t think you could say that the Church has an “official position” on separation of church and state. The Church teaches that freedom of religion should always be recognised. The Church has expressed opinions regarding the merits of the involvement of religion in politics, but I don’t think any of these opinions rises to the level of teaching.

So in my opinion you haven’t said anything that’s at odds with Church teaching.

Even if you had, I can’t see how it would be grave matter. And you certainly didn’t have knowledge or consent, if you are concerned that you have committed mortal sin.

i’m kind of confused as to your explanation but all i could think of and i wish i could
remember the gospel-chapter–and verse …

Sounds like you are scrupulous. You should talk to your priest about this.

You did not say anything contradictory to Church teaching and you did not commit any sin. The fact that you think you did and explain in such detail lead me to believe this is scrupulosity at work.

We have nothing without the grace of God, thus ALL things belong to God. I believe Jesus was being coy with those harassing Him
