I’m new to the church, just baptized and confirmed at easter vigil last saturday. The problem is, I’m not sure if i have sinned since then.

In a conversation about a certain group of people, I accidentally said that one of them did something that they did not do. It was completely accidental, and just sort of popped out into the conversation. I realized what I had said was wrong, but I didn’t correct it, although I thought about it. Was this a Sin? If so, mortal or venial?

This seems to fit bearing false witness against a neighbor, but I am not completely sure it fits the qualifications of mortal sin.

Can someone help?

It is hard to say without knowing the details when discussing whether mortal or not, but in this case, I would say you at most committed a venial sin of omission if you purposefully with held info that would have helped the image of another. And for this you can say a simple act of contrition to God or next time you recieve communion you will be forgiven of it. Only is it necessary to go to confession to be forgiven of mortal sins; though going to confess on a regular basis like weekly or monthly even for only venial sins is a pious behavior.

Here is a list of venial and mortal sins that some one in another post put up and I found pretty good.

Hi Clairdelune and welcome, welcome, welcome home!!

These kinds of questions are tough to answer, kind of like when my kids give me those “hypothetical” questions - I can give them my opinion but I was not there. With that being said, please allow me to pass along the advice I give them: Let your conscience be your guide.

You realized it was “wrong” and were sorry you said it, so yup, let’s call it sin. Recall the three requirements for mortal sin: grave matter, full knowledge, consent of the will. Doesn’t sound to me like you fully engaged your will (it came out accidentally) so the lie itself seems venial to me.

However, you then recognized the lie and chose not to correct it. Now you have engaged your will. If the lie is grave, that may be mortal. Only you can answer that. You may want to just jot these down and speak to Father at your next confession.

If you will permit me, I find it refreshing that someone so new is taking the faith seriously. God Bless.

Context is everything, however I would believe that it may be along the lines of a Venial Sin, or not a sin at all. 🤷

WELCOME!!!
It only took you three days to experience our Catholic guilt!! 😃 No, all kidding aside, I believe that when one contemplates whether or not something is a sin after the fact then full consent is missing. Mention it at your next confession for the graces received. But, most importantly, relish the fact that you are a new member in the Church of our Lord and give praise and thanksgiving for your many blessings received. Do not dwell on this circumstance to overshadow the joy that all of heaven has for its newest member. Sing praise!

Again, WELCOME!!! and may Christ sustain your journey in our most beautiful faith! God Bless…teachccd 🙂

Thanks everyone. That helps a lot. I am going to confess it just in case, as I want to be certain that I will be able to take communion on sunday, and would rather be safe than doubtful.

but again, thanks everybody.
