Did Jesus Always Know Who He Was?

I have heard that some so-called scriptural scholars make statements during their homilies that “Jesus did not know who he really was” or something to the effect that there was confusion in Jesus’ human mind about certain things or at a certain age. A few days ago a Catholic layman (participating in a small group discussion in which I was a member) made this statement. I immediately replied that Jesus always knew who he was and that to say anything contrary borders on heresy in the Catholic Church. Needless to say, my remark humiliated that person and I am not sure how the rest of the group received it since there was no further comment made. This specific question is not addressed in the Catholic Catechism, but 473 comes close. Can you give me a more substantive and perhaps more diplomatic answer to this question?
