All you Bible scholars can probably help me with this one. Did Jesus ask a question where the answer was NO? I was listening to a program on the religious radio station and this popped into my head based on their discussion. For example, Jesus asked “Do you love me?” and of course the answer was YES. Was there ever a question he asked where the answer was no?

Here are a couple rhetorical questions where the answer was No.7"Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, Come at once and sit down at table'? 8Will he not rather say to him, Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink’? 9Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 10So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, `We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’" (Luke 17:7-10)

This wasn’t exactly a question, but it was an invitation:

Matthew 19:16-22

And behold, one came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?” And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” He said to him, “Which?” And Jesus said, “You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “All these I have observed; what do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.

Yeah, it thoguht of that one, but the guy choose to say no, the correct answer would have been yes Lord! I was think more of dircet questions like this rather than rhetorical questions from the parables. I was thinking of something along the lines of whatever Jesus asks of us, the answer should always be yes, as shown in the bible. so i was wondering if there was ever a question where the answer should have been no.

which of you if his child asks for an egg would give him a scorpion?

In regards to Jesus’ questions, I think it is important to remember, what I believe practically all scripture scholars agree on, namely at the Core of Jesus’ ministry (which included teachings, parables and even his mircles) was the proclamation that the Kingdon of God was amoung us here and now. From this came the demand of Jesus to us all to be aware of God’s active participation in our lives an respond to it by giving our lives totally to God and the presence of His Kingdom. So, I believe all of Christ’s questions boiled down to one simple question, “Are you aware of the Father’s loving presence here and now, and if so how are going to respond to the Father’s Active and Loving Presence now in your life?”

John 6:66-67, conclusion of the Bread of Life Discourses:

After this many of His disciples drew back and no longer went about with Him. Jesus said to the twelve, “Will you also go away?”

Simon Peter, while not answering that question in the single word, “no”, certainly did respond in the negative.
