My brother in law, who is a big follower of Fr Thomas Keating and his Centering Prayer movement, told me that Christ never came to establish a church. He also said that we will eventually need to figure out how we will function without sacrements with the priest shortage. I had never heard that before, can you help with this?

Hi,

That kind of flaky, liberal talk is typical of my generation. It’s is evidence of a mentality that is losing or has in fact lost its faith. Certainly every human organization must have a reason for existence and some structure in order to survive. From the beginning the Catholic Church has had both—plus the power and protection of the Holy Spirit because it is also divine.

Jesus founded the Church in order to extend His presence here after He was to ascend to the Father. His Church will always have sacraments because He is its origin and its head.
