I read in a book that Jesus and Mary were very close.
And He - told her - all about what was going to happen -
His arrest, His torture and the crucifixion to save the world.
And His resurrection.

Any thoughts ?

Yes.

Mary was educated in the prophets, 1st Century Jews knew well the Scriptures. Mary knew the prophesies when she said “Yes”.

The venerable Mary of Agreda thought that this was the case I think.

Yes. Mary knew her Son was born to die for us in fulfillment of the prophecies.

Do you recall the Wedding Feast at Cana? Mary knew Jesus could, and would if she asked, perform a miracle to provide the wine they needed.

I had a notion - that one of the thieves - crucified with Christ -
he had a change of heart - after derailing Jesus -
and it came about by seeing the mother of Jesus - in anguish of spirit -
One of the Gospels says - that both - did - derail Christ …

He trusted in God;
let him deliver him now,
if he will have him:
for he said, I am the Son of God.
The thieves also,
which were crucified with him,
cast the same in his teeth.

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

The thieves were dying - and insulting Jesus - or doubting Jesus - with the religious people.

Mary was well versed in Scripture and would have known the Redeemer was going to suffer. Simon’s prophecy would have confirmed these notions.

And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
Luke 2:34-35 (emphasis added).

She had at least an idea that something horrible would happen. And what worse “piercing of the soul” could happen to a mother than the death of her child?

The Gospel accounts don’t always agree on specific details. I think only one of the thieves berated Jesus. The other thief rebuked the first one.

Yes. Look at the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple:
34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

Jesus told his diciples ahead of time that he would be handed over and put to death and rise again on the the third day. So I imagine everyone knew ahead of time, but whether they fully realized it and what it meant until after is another thing.

And I cannot imagine Him not telling His mother in advance.

I fully blame that song “Mary, Did You Know?” for most people thinking Mary was not aware of the writings of the prophets.

Yes, she was his mother. 🙂 🙂 How much closer can you get? 🙂

Also, consider how in Israel and Judah the mother of a king was the queen. If you read the book of kings they often mention the name of the king’s mother along with the name of the king. It might seem strange to us to mention the mother, but she was obviously an important enough person to mention her name in the Bible along side each king.

Now consider that Jesus is the prophesied Davidic King, son of David, whose throne would endure forever. What then does that make Mary as the mother of this King? The Queen of course.

"Say to the king and to the queen mother,… " (Jeremiah 13:18)

🙂

As to whether Mary fully comprehended the death of her son would depend on whether God wanted to reveal that to her. Jesus didn’t tell Mary everything. He didn’t tell her and Joseph he would be in the temple (his Father’s house) for instance when they thought they lost him as a boy. It was something they had to learn through experience. It could be the crucifixion was this type of event where she could not really comprehend it until she experienced it and the Resurrection.

Jesus told his diciples ahead of time that he would die but also be raised on the third day. I would think he did this to warn them what was going to happen but also so they would realize after the fact that Jesus reassured them these things would come to pass and that death could not hold him down because he was God’s Son.

Mary being closer to Jesus and herself being full of grace it would not surprise me if she has special knowledge about these events before hand. Nonetheless, it would still have been torture in any case for her to see her son crucified. Did God want to spare her from unnecessary worry about her son’s crucifixion beforehand? Nevertheless, imagine how she felt to see her son rise from the dead and overcoming death itself for all of us.

It is hard to say. I am assuming you are talking about Mary, the Mother of Jesus, not Mary Magdalene. If I am wrong in that assumption, I apologize. When you read the gospels however, especially Mark, although Jesus repeatedly told the disciples about his impending death, they clearly never “got it.” It wasn’t until after the resurrection appearances that the disciples (and likely Mary) really began to understand full blast what Jesus came to do. To me, and this is just my opinion, it seems that it was only seeing things in hindsight after Jesus returned and appeared to his disciples that people finally understood his fulfillment of the prophecies regarding the suffering servant, and his death and resurrection.

The finding of Jesus in the temple and His remaining under her authority until she initiated the beginning of his public ministry, to me, shouts that she knew.
