Did Pius II really say it?

Anti Catholic websites claim that Pius II said, “Rome is the only city in the world run by bastards.”
  1. Is that true? I have been unable to find anything in a Catholic site. The only ones that carry this purported quote are rabid anti-Catholics.
  2. If it is true, what did he mean actually?
This question seems to have stumped the CA Apologists because I’ve seen neither hide nor hair of it since I asked them several weeks ago.

I have no idea whether he said it, or not, or in what context, but he is known to have authored several erotic plays before he became pope, and perhaps it is a line from one of those.

What difference does it make?
 
Are they trying to infer that he was talking about the Church of Rome? Because their quote says the city of Rome, which is a whole other animal. Besides, most of those antiCatholic sites are full of misrepresentations, misquotes, half truths and outright lies. Having come from an antiCatholic background, I don’t give much credence to just about anything they have to say about the Catholic Church and anything associated with it. Very few of them have ever done their homework. :rolleyes:

Unfortunately, yes…he was the one who said it. Rome was such an immorally bankrupt place, that there were many children who were fatherless and even some of the popes and priests had children of other women married or single.
 
Unfortunately he did say it,we must remember that at that time rome was a morally bankrupt city and many of them were fatherless usually the sons of the priests and popes…
