Did Purgatory exist before the Resurrection?

Prior to the resurrection, when Jesus opened the gates of Heaven, did Purgatory (as we know if now) exist? I know we use Macabees as an example of prayers for the dead in support of the Doctrine of Purgatory, but I’m just wondering about this place of purification prior to the gates of Heaven being opened for souls.
