Did sinners in the OT need perfect contrition in order to be forgiven?

Since Christ didn’t come and establish the Sacrament of Reconciliation yet, would this mean that sinners who only had imperfect contrition were not forgiven?

I believe so.

However as I’ve come to believe, God didn’t send Jesus to change His mind about men, but to change man’s mind about God.

In other words, God’s mercy was present before during and after Christ’s death and resurrection. Our job is to trust in God.

I doubt God would hold back grace from people that they would have received if they didn’t happen to be born in the past. But I don’t speak with any authority.
