In 1998 Assata Shakur, an activist, Black Panther and a Catholic that was found guilty for killing a NJ State Trooper, wrote St. JPP II a letter. Despite being found guilty, there was no physical evidence linking Shakur to the homicide, she was also found shot twice in the arm lying on the ground at the crime scene at the NJ Turnpike. Shakur and two passengers were pulled over for a broken tail light, one of the passengers was killed.
Shakur claimed to be tortured while imprisoned and being held in solidary confinement for 20 months. She eventually escaped and made her way to Cuba where she remains as a political refugee.
That was all for background, her letter is published all over the internet but I have yet to find any sort of response from the late pope. Did he respond? Privately? Publically? I don understand that because of the delicacy of the situation he may have responded below the radar and thus there is no record of it. Below is a written copy of the letter as well as a video recording of Shakur reading it.
