Did the Bible condone slavery?

I was debating online with someone who referenced the Bible where it spoke of how one treated slaves. The person I was debating said the Bible endorsed slavery and was therefore immoral. Could you please explain how the Bible can reference the proper actions a master has toward their slave and yet not condone slavery?
