Did the blessing of holy water change after VII?

I recently read that the Rite of Blessing of water changed after Vatican II and that now most water is really not “blessed”, therefore it is has little to no benfit - Is this true?

If so it offers an answer to a incident I had at a shrine, the nun told my kids and I that we should get all the Holy water we could from the font as it was exorcised, blessed and and more efficacious (sp?)
 
Seems to me to be more Vat II bashing and nothing more.

The “incident”, to me, just shows a little bias - as if other shrines etc are less quality than that one.
 
I think Holy Water and Holy Salt should always be used together. I also think that the Church does need to get back to teaching about the fight between Jesus and Satan and the importance of the Sacrament of Penance. The Church needs to tone down on the love stuff and everybody is going to make type deal.
 
The prayers have been modified, and now do not include an exorcism prayer over the water and the salt. VII has done tremendous good for the church, but in some places there are defects and abuses that need correction. I feel that this is one of those areas. So when you say “it’s just VII bashing” it seems to me that you are taking some of the changes we are talking about lightly.
 
HERE is the pre-Vatican II blessing of water.

THIS is the only example I can find of a post Vatican II blessing of water (you have to scroll down a bit).

I have a meeting in a few minutes (yes, on a Saturday night :rolleyes: ), so maybe someone else can find another source.

The EF Easter Vigil Mass with the extensive blessings of water, candles, etc. is so exquisitely beautiful. I highly recommend it (with a very good missal) for next Easter for anyone who has not experienced it. 👍

Where is the proof that the church would stand behind “fake” holy water or approve inappropriate/ineffective prayers for a sacramental?

I do not believe the church would perpetrate such a fraud and implying that she would is at best Vat II bashing
 
[Edited] the prayers now in use do not have the exorcism prayed over them. Wherever the holy water is placed, there the prayers of the priest also go. [Edited]

Is it or isn’t it valid?

If it is not then a claim is being made (in a backhanded way) that the church is committing a fraud.

If it is valid then we are dealing with bashing.
 
Holy water is a sacramental. Is it not true that a sacramental has no great virtue in itself but in the use that is made of it? Can’t a priest bless anything, including water, even without using a ‘special’ blessing even if there also is a special blessing?
 
In the Byzantine Churches, there is no exorcism in the blessing of water. This is a Western practice, but not universal.
 
[Edited] And many thanks to the poster who provided links to the pre and post V II blessings. I did see the request for Christ’s grace to be in the water so to quote a dear friend of mine “It’s all good people!”

But in defense of the sweet little nun, she was right and not just proud of “her shrine’s” water 😉
 
Well, a priest I know said that the head exorcist of Rome said the older form of blessing Holy Water was indeed more powerful.

I must say that it is not the water itself but what is asked of God in the blessing. In the new rite, it just asks for it to remind us of our baptism or a one line prayer for blessing which is good and all and still works. However, in the old one, it asks more things like protection against illness, cast out the devil, cast out evil wherever it is sprinkled etc. The older blessing tries to ask God to do more thing with the water.
